Neelalohithadasan Nadar
sentenced for outraging modesty of woman I.A.S.
officer
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : A.
Neelalohithadasan Nadar, an opposition legislator
in Kerala, was Thursday sentenced to three months
in prison and asked to pay a fine of Rs.50,000
for outraging the modesty of a woman official.
The sentence was passed by Thiruvananthapuram
chief judicial magistrate, who also granted bail
to Nadar. The incident had occurred Dec 21, 1999
at the office in the assembly complex of Nadar,
then the state transport minister. He had
outraged the modesty of Nalini Netto, an Indian
Administrative Service (IAS) official who was
then transport secretary.
At the time of the incident, only Nadar and
Netto were present in the office. The issue
surfaced after some time and Nadar had to quit as
minister Feb 9, 2000 after Netto formally lodged
a complaint with then chief minister E.K.
Nayanar. Netto also lodged a complaint with the
Crime Branch of the state police.
Nadar said he would appeal the verdict. This
is the second such case in which Nadar has been
sentenced.
Last year, a court in Kozhikode sentenced him
to a year in prison for outraging the modesty of
woman forest official Prakrithi Srivasatava.
Nadar later secured bail in that case. Thursday's
verdict came after a protracted legal battle
during which Nadar approached the Supreme Court
to stay the case.
Nadar, who belongs to the Janata Dal-Secular
(JD-S), is a former Lok Sabha member and a
veteran legislator. Speaking to IANS, Public
Prosecutor Ajay Kumar said the magistrate had
asked Nadar to reform himself and that was the
reason why he was given a lesser sentence.
