New Keokuk Swimming Pool proposal
Above: click the photo to see the full layout of the proposed pool.
Below is a letter I received from Aquatics comittee chair, after writing the pool comittee over my concerns for the citizens of Keokuk. mY main concern was the cost and financing, and if we were to look forward to yet another tax increase to fund this project..

I feel collecting the revnues for this pool will affect our small community.  Interest may be down, but taxes, and utilities increase at an alarming rate.

It is my opinion that we should be working hard on a package that will produce more jobs, better roads that will benefit
Keokuk, and not be looking for ways to spend money for a seasonal inviroment that does not benefit the majority of the people.

As you will see from the link above the daily costs along with the yearly memberships will be discriminating to those families who are of low income or out of work. So this new pool will most likely benefit a small amount of the people. I believe it is the pool committee's hope that this pool will draw in business from outside our community. Yes it will help Keokuk government, but it will not help those who are strugling with high taxes, utilities and decreased wages in our community.

The letter states below that $3.88 million is projected but yet $10 million is in question here? This leaves $6.12 million over. I ask you, what will the remainder of the money will be used for? Remember we are still paying off the new Middle school debt with no relief in site. And the possible demolition of the old Keokuk Middle School.. What's next?

     Holly;

Thanks you for your interest in the proposed municipal pool.
The estimated   total price for  all expenses related to the construction of the new pool, including demolition of the old pool, is about 3.88 million. I twill be located very near the existing facility in Tolmie park.

The operating budget for the pool has been calculated and reviewed by city personnel and     we are happy to say that the new pool's revenue is expected to cover operating costs. You   may or may not be aware that the current facility operates at an alarming loss of funds.        Admission prices were recommended after an extensive review of pool prices in this area.    The goal is to keep this an affortable recreational opportunity for everyone.

In general , daily admission prices are
$2.50 for children through 18 years of age, $3.50 for adults. The city will be allowing for sales of season passes at a discount rate of $35.00 for   children , $55.00 for adults and $100.00 for families. These prices are equal or lower than every other pool in your area. There is currently no start date for construction.

I hope I have answered all your questions, we do plan on having public informational presentations in the future to provide more details. Thanks for your interest and we lcome any help or ideas for our projects.
