Mackenzie Has Seen Many Movies; Now She Will List & Review Some of Her Favorites!:

The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys Rated: Real There's no twist. There's nothing fancy. It's simply adolescent males experiencing the bitter taste of reality. Two best friends are altar boys at a catholic school. They despise their superiors and create a comic book club type thing to channel their frustration. The end is a surprise (but, not a twist...because it's logical) and the film is laced with hormones and believable dialogue. Not to mention that the main character is the spitting image of my boyfriend.

Edward Scissor Hands Rated: Classic Borderline Dr. Suess at times, but never losing that sense of delusional reality of Perfect Suburbia, this film is a fabulous synthesis of the opposite sides of a perfection-flawed spectrum. Edward, a 'hand'icapped individual is brought down from atop his castle to a little suburb by a kind hearted women who sells cosmetics. At first, Edward is a mystery, because he has scissors instead of hands. The whole town finds ways to put him to good use, whether it is cutting bush-figures, or cutting dog's hair. Eventually, however, after a few misunderstandings, Edward becomes the scapegoat. The only people who see Edward for who he really is, are: The woman who brought him down in the first place, and her daughter who has fallen in love with Edward. So, there you have it, Uniform Society vs. The Gifted.

Memento Rated: Intellectually Tantilizing A murder mystery backwords? Sounds a little sketchy, right? You already know the killer is! Not really. This movie is totally topsy turvey. An intellectual roller coaster, whizzing past all the possiblities only stopping at the one inevitable conclusion that will leave you saying,"What?!" for hours. The main character is a man who has a memory condition where he can not make any new memories. With this disadvantage he is trying to find and kill the man who murdered his wife. Half of the movie is going backwords, and the other going forwards. Where they meet and cross over, I'm still not sure of. This film leaves you guessing right up until the last 3 minutes, literally. One warning, Guy Pearce's shirt is off for almost the entirety of the movie, and even though it doesn't detract from the movie AT ALL (you'll see why), boyfriends/fathers/brothers might be squinting during the important sceans if their 'sensitive' to that.

Night on Earth Rated: Frivelously Ironic The premise of this film is what six cabbies are doing all over the world at about 7:07 in the morning. Starting in LA and moving east towards Rome, this film is nothing but ironic situations with more than a tinge of humor. This film shouldn't be merited for it's plotline, as it doesn't really have one, but instead for its invetiveness, ingenuity, and originality. An amusing series of poignant anecdotes, Night on Earth is fun and leaves you with a smile on your face, despite the anticlimatical ending of the very last story. It is, without a doubt, a movie you watch, and later ask your friends, "So who was your favorite character?"

Requiem for a Dream Rated: Artistically Sick & Twisted Now, I'm writing this the day after I saw this movie, so I'm still feeling the after-pangs of the emotional burden that comes with watching this film. Don't get me wrong, it's definetly a must-see, but only for the emotionally stable. As you may have heard, this movie is mostly about drugs. The portrayal of the drug-taking is really creative and I loved it. Sounds effects for this film are also spectacularly primal. The focal-point characters are a boy named Harry (junkie) his friend (also a junkie) his girlfriend Marrion (likewise, junkie) and Harry's mother who lives by herself. It all starts when Harry's mother recieves a phone call from someone informing her that she is going to be on television. Mother decides to lose some weight to fit into her old red dress (a classic element that I found sweet). Harry and his friend decide to start dealing heroin (or cocain, it's hard to tell, unless you do drugs yourself). The summer goes well. Harry is making big time money to support Marrion's dream of opening a fashion store, and Harry's mother is losing weight just fine. However, the the fate of the characters begins to spin out of control with the begining of the fall. Now, I don't want to give away any of this film, because it's really fantastic, but let's just say...no one lives happily ever after.

The Shawshank Redemption Rated: Classic If you have not already seen this movie, I suggest you stop reading this review this second, and get your butt to the video-rental place. A powerful film to say the least. Every line delivered has true meaning and really makes you reflect on your own definition of freedom. The Shawshank Redemption is the story of a banker, accused of murderig his wife, who is sent to a corrupt prison and, through perserverence, 'builds' his own freedom. Again, I don't want to give away anything, so instead of listening to me beat around the bush of why this movie is wonderful, just go see it. 1
