The Digger's Union is an adventuring society, snidely called the Grave Diggers' Union by the orgainzation's detractors.  For over a century this semi-independent organization has supplied treasure hunters and adventurers to Morgrave University and its affiliates for special projects.  With the end of the Last War, the organization has expanded to a full-grown adventurers guild independent from, but still friendly with, the powerful dragonmark houses, supplying veterans and bored youth with hospice and employment from a varitey of patrons.

Our brave adventurers have each recenlty arrived in Sharn, the City of Towers, and met each other at the Grave Diggers Union..  The unnamed warforged carried Miko, the artificer, on his back in a basket.  While exploring the city for the first time, they witnessed a murder!  Then two cloaked figures approached them from either side of the bridge.  Swiftfist landed a solid blow to the first cloaked figure when he would not respond to questions.  Razor moved to assist Swiftfist, while Torbek, Aragorn, the unnamed warforged, and Miko moved to face the other cloaked figure.  Swiftfist landed another mighty attack with his deadly hands to bring the cloaked figure to the ground.  Swiftfist knew from the attack that the figure was either wearing armor or was a warforged.  Torbek landed a mighty blow to the cloaked figure on the north side of the bridge to expose his warforged skin and Aragorn followed up with the deathblow.  At the same time, a townswoman screamed "murder"!!!

The adventurers quickly searched the bodies and recovered several interesting items including a strange book with no words. Swiftfist then dumped a warforged & the human murder victim over the side of the bridge before the city guard could arrive.  However, the remaining body still littered the bridge with blood and gore.

The town guard was quickly on the scene.  The leader, a gruff dwarf, commanded the party to lay down their weapons and explain themselves.  Torbek, also a dwarf, tried to explain their situation to the sergeant, but the seasoned vetran of the city guard did not buy Torbek's tale.  The other party members spoke up and cooberated Torbek's story.  Finally, the city guard released the adventurers and told them to be on their way.

The group barely made it to the next spire, when another cloaked figure came upon them.  The mysterious figure spoke quickly, "If you know the truth about Bodal's murder, go to the Broken Andvil tavern at dawn".   The cloaked figure then turned and disappeared into the darkness of the rainy night!

1/13/05 Update - Miko joins an Artificer's Shop!
After recieving a mysterious message from a cloaked figure, the player characters headed back to the Digger's Union for the night.  Early the next morning as the group is gathering at the Union hall, Miko announced that he has taken a job working for an experienced artificer shop in Sharn.  He must report to his new employer and won't be able to continue adventuring with the party.  However, he encourages the party to visit him in the future.

As the group gathered to embark on their grand adventure, Aragorn was nowhere to be found.  However, while the group searched for him, they found two brave souls that were willing to join them in their quest to find the lost schema.  Almorth the Bastard and Istban grabbed their gear and headed to The Broken Anvil tavern.  There they met Gilard, halfling innkeeper, who lead the group to a back room.  Lady Elaydren, member of House Cannith, offers the group a handsome reward to recover a long lost schema from the ruins underneath Dorasharn Tower.  The party quickly accepted and set out for Dorasharn Tower.  However, on the way out of the tavern, "Gizzard" overheard two patrons discussing Aerenal, the island-continent kingdom of the elves and something about a hidden shrine.  At the door of the tavern, Swiftfist bumped into a drunken & belligerent human.  Torbek stepped in to diffuse the situation and was able to resolve the conflict without coming to blows.  The drunk said that he would be "watching out" for the group in the future.

With the map that Lady Elaydren provided, the party easily found their way into the bowels of Dorasharn Tower.  Deep beneath the sewers they found the Rat's Market, an underground market frequented only by the dregs of society. Swiftfist was stubbornly negotiating with a goblin, Skaken, for the services of a guide, when Istban noticed two shifters staring at the party through the crowded market.  The brave adventurers moved to confront the shifters, but shifters disappeared into the crowded market. After a long drawn out negotiation, Skaken was finally intimidated into serving as a guide to help the party find the E-213 Valve Cluster.

Skaken led the group to the E-213 Valve Cluster and promptly left in fear.  Gizzard slipped and fell in the sewage stream as the group tried to reach an alcove marked with the symbol of House Cannith.  After searching for traps and locks, the brute force of three party members opened the huge stone door to reveal a spiral staircase.  The stairs led the group deeper and deeper into the depths of Dorasharn.  The stairs led to the ruins of the Dorasharn Forge and a temple of Onatar.  The Vault of Dorsharn contained an abandoned furnace and forge.  Also in the vault were the undead Ghoul Knight and his minions,  who were charged with guarding the ancient forge.  The group tried to negotiate with the fiend, but he was determined to destroy the intruders.  Battle quickly followed the brief discussion resulting in significant damage to Razor.  The wizard Istban killed one of the vicious undead creatures with his mighty dagger!  After a heroic melee, the party defeated the undead legions of the Ghoul Knight.

After the battle with the Ghoul Knight of Dorasharn, The General was missing!  The warforged disappeared without a clue.  Was he abducted?  Did he retreat?  Was he consumed by the forge itself?

The brave adventurers licked their wounds and searched the Vault of Dorasharn.  Almorth made a quick slight of hand to capture a ring from the fallen ghoul knight, calling it his precious.  A further search of the room found a secret door that lead to a chamber with two pedestals and two iron dog-like creatures.  Razor attempted to handle animal on the iron beasts, which provoked an attack of opportunity!  Swiftfist and Torbek quickly followed into melee combat while Almorth shot his crossbow from the back of the room.  Istban retrieved the longsword from the ghoul knight's body and passed it off to Torbek. The battle raged on as Almorth passed his crossbow to the now very wounded Razor and charged into melee with his spear.  Torbek was gravely wounded and was able to dodge an attack from the iron beast while he drank the water from the Temple of Onatar.  With the brave adventurers badly wounded, the iron beasts were finally defeated.

A search of the secret room revealed a cache of armor and weapons.  A search of the iron beasts found three triangular rods.  Swiftfist and Istban inserted one of the rods into a hole in one of the pedestals, releasing a burst of poison gas into their faces!  Almorth took two rods together, in the shape of a square, and inserted them into the other pedestal.  The schema was released!  Istban used his arcane powers to detect magic on the still locked schema to discover that it in fact was not magical and merely a decoy.

The party moved to the Temple of Onatar to rest and heal.  As they rested, a large warforged entered the temple and spoke in a powerful booming voice "weakflesh, now you face Saber, greatest of the devoted followers of the Lord of Blades.  Throw down the schema and walk away.  This day does not have to end with your blood on my hands".  The courageous adventurers exploded into action and destroyed the warforged before he could land a blow.  His adamantine body armor was quickly removed by Almorth using his "put a wagon on blocks in 10 seconds feat".

DM's Map - Pyramid of the Hidden Shrine

The group arrived back at the Broken Anvil Inn and met with Lady Eladren.  She was very exited to receive the schema and gladly paid the remaining 900gp reward.  She introduced the group to her House Cannith associate, Balot.  He has an important secret  mission to an island off the coast of Xen 'Drik to find an ancient hidden temple and recover a very dangerous artifact from its shrine.  Balot has already recruited Cession the Bard, "Medic" the Cleric, and the lovely Victoria, so the group eagerly joined in the quest for the hidden shrine and a 2,000gp reward.

The group took their reward money and loot from Dorasharn and visited many of the shops in Sharn's lower wards.  Cession was able to negotiate the sale of the adamantine armor and the other loot for a handsome price, which the group shared with their new companions.  After a quick shopping spree, a good night of sleep, and a bath for Istban, the group met Lady and Balot to begin their mission.

They were instructed to travel to H'atheril on the lightning rail, then travel overland to the village of Black Pit to find Brother Atbu, an expert on the research of the ancient artifact.  The group was then to travel overland to Cragwar and board a House Lyrandar airship for Xen 'Drik.  The airship was to leave in two days, so the party had no time to waste!  Furthermore, once they arrived on the island off Xen 'Drik, the airship would return in three days to pick them up.

The group embarked on their quest with cautious optimism.  Their journey to Black Pit was surprising uneventful, considering the news of violence in H'atheril.  Once in Black Pit the group found a very drunken Brother Atbu in the Cat & Friar Inn.  The grabbed him and his research papers and left for Cragwar & the airship with all haste.

Session Picture: Defeating the Hag (represented by a Harbinger Ogre)

The brave band of adventurers arrived in Cragwar at the House Lyrandar Airship Dock in time to meet up with their employer, Balot.  He informed the party "You are departing from Cragwar because the nature of you mission would require an amount of attention in Sharn that we wish to avoid.  Our original plans were for your group to travel aboard the Airship Traw, but we have encountered circumstances beyond our control that force us to offer the Airship Voko as an alternative vessel.  I'm sure that you will find her comfortable and expedient on your journey to Xen'drik"  As the Airship Voko lifted off from the dock, an explosion of fire and black smoke erupted from the Airship Traw that sent her flailing to the ground in a booming crash on her port side!  Balot was visibly shaken by the incident and commented that there was a competing organization that wished for the mission to fail.  He went on to add that it was only speculation that the other organization was involved in the Traw explosion.

Once the party arrived in Xen'drik they wasted no time in arriving at the ruins of an ancient holy city located on near the top of the island's only mountain.  The group explored the ruins and Torbek became extremely anxious and afraid to be in there.  The group discovered a ruin that had recently been cleaned and the steps to the top of the temple were free of debris.  Once on top of the small pyramid shaped temple, they found a triangular stone column with carvings in an ancient form of common.  The story told of a civilization devoted to the moon and night.  Later on the party discovered that the ancient culture also worshipped bats and VAMPIRES!!!

Almorth found a trapped secret button that opened a steep stairwell into the temple.  Luckily he was able to avoid the poison needle trap!  When the party descended into the depths of the temple, they found a long underground ceremonial chamber with a statue of a demonic Bat at the end.  While the group was searching the ceremonial chamber, Medic and Torbek investigated a side passage, where they bumped into GNOLLS in a 5' hallway!  A stagnant combat ensued in the narrow hallway that included a "Torbek toss" and effective use of spells from Istban and Almorth.  Cession's inspiration helped land several devastating blows to the smelly Gnolls.

Back in the ceremonial chamber, Victoria and the bumbling Brother Akbu (NPC) went through the secret door in the bat statue that Almorth discovered.  They found a room with more nasty gnolls and a creature that looked like an ancient female human, but impossibly tall.  It dad deep blue skin and filthy black hair.  A quick tactical retreat and a few screams for help later put Victoria and Brother Akbu back in the ceremonial chamber with other party members on the way to help.  Quickly the Gnolls and "Blue Lady" moved into the ceremonial chamber and a mighty battle broke out.  The party was able to defeat their foe and recover the Black Sphere.  They also found lots of "Black Dragon's Blood", a drug used in Khorvaire to increase certain sorcerer and dragonmark spells, but with possible devastating side effects.

After the party finished searching the temple, they moved on to the largest pyramid in the ruined holy city.  Two levels into the huge structure, they disturbed the tomb an ancient vampire.  The unhappy vampire nearly killed poor Victoria, but Swiftfist was there to comfort and aid the lovely Victoria in his own "special" way!  The party made a hasty retreat out of the chamber, and we ended the session with them RUNNING AWAY!!!!!!

Will the party survive the vampire's wrath?  Can they make it to the landing zone in time to meet the airship back to Khorvaire?  Are there other forces at work in the ruins?  Is "anything" else on this island?  Those questions and many more will be answered at the next session on Feb.6th 2005!

As the adventurers rushed out of the pyramid, a thunderous roar follows them outside.  When they turn to look, a swarm of small black bats spew out of the door of the pyramid!  From the top of the pyramid, the party spotted an interesting temple on the other side of the courtyard.  Then they spotted a group of orcs approaching the ancient city from the south west and a squad of hobgoblins moving toward the city from the south east!  Then, a group of human mercenaries moving to the south of the pyramid!

They quickly moved toward the new temple, without any DM coercion what so ever.  :)  At the temple, they found two doors and choose to enter the one on the right.  It was bravely checked for traps by Almorth, who found that it was recently repaired.  The double doors led to a hallway with numerous wall paintings and carvings similar to the other temples.  The long hall ended with doors to the left and right.  They chose the door on the right.  Once they opened the stuck door, they found the  lair of a Basilisk!  The party ran in fear of the monster, except for Razor and Medic.  They bravely engaged the fearsome monster in battle. With the sounds of combat coming from the chamber, the other party members joined their comrades and they surrounded the beast.  Cession charged and grappled the monster with his cape!  He covered the its eyes and pinned the beast's head to the floor.  The others moved in to slay the beast.

The brave adventurers moved back into the hall and opened the left door.  They found a room with debris, trash, and the remains of the collapsed ceiling.  The party searched the room and found six foul humanoid creatures with molted decaying flesh drawn tight across their clearly visible bones.  The mostly hairless creatures glared their burning eyes and  snarled their carnivorous teeth toward the adventurers.  Medic rebuked four of the evil creatures, while the party engaged the others.  After the creatures were defeated, the party found a masterwork longsword and six black pearls.  Another stuck door was the only other exit in the room.  Medic broke through the door and stumbled into the pit on the other side of the door.  Torbek jumped into the pit behind him, and Istban fell into the pit while crossing the narrow plank bridge.  Swiftfist contemplated suicide, but just couldn't roll bad enough to fall into the pit.  Cession lowered his rope to aid his compades back to the surface.

Torbek felt the ground tremble and shake, but he is unsure of the cause.

The party moved onward to discover an open courtyard inside the building.  A group of five half-orcs and three orcs were waiting in the courtyard.  A large orc, calling himself Ghal, commanded the party to explain why they were on the sovereign ground of Droaam.  Negotiations quickly turned hostile as Torbek drove into battle!  The other party members followed and they made short work of the nasty orcs.  A wounded half-orc begged for mercy after his leader was slain.  Medic offered to spare his life if he agreed to change his evil ways and serve the church, for a handsome salary.  The half-orc told the group that he was a soldier from Droaam sent to the island to pick up cargo and return it to Droaam.  He also told the group that his master was in the next room.  That didn't sit well with Torbek, being a good orc hating dwarf.  So, Torbek raised his axe to finish the vile creature, but Medic's halberd stopped the blade from harming the cringing half-orc.  Medic said "If it must be done, I'll do it", and the warforged quickly eased the suffering of the half-orc.

The adventurers moved through the double doors to find a cleric, three orcs, a sorcerer, and a very large troll!  The cleric introduced herself as Farah the Daask Lord.  The group flew into combat after a very brief discussion.  The group heard screams from the other room, apprently coming from Victoria and Brother Akbu.  Cession felt the tingle of a sleep spell run through his body, but the half-elf was able to resist.  The orcs fell quickly and the sorcerer was slain.  The Daask Lord summoned four ghasts into combat, while the troll bashed away at the party!  Many party members fell ill to the paralysis of the ghasts, but Medic was able to turn three of them.  Farah the Daask Lord offered to accept the party's surrender and give them a speedy death, but the brave adventurers fought on!  One by one the party members fell to ghast paralysis, sleep spells, and finally Medic was the last one standing.  The cleric cast a hold person spell on the brave warforged that he was not able to resist.

THE ENTIRE PARTY WAS TAKEN PRISONER BY THE DAASK LORDS!!!

The party awoke to find themselves in the darkness of a cave wearing only a cotton loin cloth and missing all their equipment.  Swiftfist instantly pimped on Victoria, who was impressed with Swiftfist's loin cloth!  A scroll case held a note from an unknown friend along with three scrolls.  Medic cast a light spell and the party moved toward the left tunnel.  Almorth encountered a faint flickering light and followed it down the tunnel.  Torbek joined and the two ran into a sand creature.  Istban cast a dig spell under the sand creature.  Cession cast a gust of wind on the creature, which ignited Torbek's flaming shlong trap in his loin cloth.  Needless to say, but everyone in a 5' radius took damage, especially Torbek's shlong. Torbek picked up Medic and body slammed him into the creature, which also inflicted minor.

After the sand creature was defeated, the group followed the faint flickering glow to the end of the tunnel.  It appeared to be leading the group.  Torbek spoke with the very hungry Will-o-Wisp creature, who was waiting on a victim to die in order to consume life force.  Torbek tried to get some help from the Will-o-Wisp, but the wisp only wished to feed on the party.   So, the wisp followed the party throughout the dungeon.

The group encountered a giant crayfish, but escaped before the beast could enjoy a tasty adventurer snack.  They followed a stream into a tunnel to a junction filled with fungi.  They moved onward to encounter two giant 7' tall mushroom creatures that emitted a loud shriek as the party came close.  The noise alerted 5 zombie guards that arrived soon after the mushrooms were crushed.  Victoria called upon her divine powers and turned the undead before they could harm the party.  However, Almorth disturbed a cloud of yellow spores while searching the undead.

The tunnel lead the group to a large cavern filled with large mushrooms.  They moved to the left tunnel and found a chamber of cultivated mushrooms with 5 mushroom creatures farming them.  A mushroom man stepped forward and shot spores onto Almoth's face, which enabled him to communicate telepathically with the mushroom man.  The mushroom men insisted on taking the interlopers to "The King"!

The myconid guards led the party to the Mushroom King where he brought forth the "other" intruders, Miko and two sailers!  The king offered to tell the party how to escape the dungeon if they would slay the dreaded Old One, the giant grayfish.  They agreed but requested that they rest for a while.  Once they were refreshed, the party set out to meet the Old One.

Almorth suggested that the sailors lure the crayfish out while the party attacks it.  However, the crayfish cut the sailors into pieces with a swift attack!  Medic moved into the water and moved to battle the crayfish.  Swiftfist, Torbek and Razor swam into the melee.  Torbek jumped onto the monster's back and began flailing away with his stone club.  Swiftfist delivered the death blow that sent the create to the bottom of the pool. Miko swamp into an underwater tunnel and wasn't seen again!   The party drug the monster to shore and stripped it of all useful items.

The party returned the claw of the crayfish to the Mushroom King, who was very happy with the party's success as the crayfish was the myconid's greatest enemy.  He granted them the knowledge of the exit from the caverns and they quickly moved out.  In an intersection, the party encountered a ROPER and RAN AWAY, except Razor, who was dropped to -2 hit points!!!

The party reached the chimney exit and saw the golden sunshine beaming down.  Torbek and Swiftfist tried to climb the slimy walls, but the acidic slime burned their skin.  Istban cast spider climb on Medic who moved to the surface to begin making a rope out of the jungle vines.  In the mean time, the hungry roper followed the party through the passages into the chimney.  Almorth, Cession, Swiftfist, and Victoria moved into battle.  Cession was captured by one of the roper's tentacles, but broke free before it could crush him.  Medic began "tossing" party members up the chimney to help make the vine rope.  Just as the rope was finished, the brave and wounded adventurers killed the vicious roper.  Thus, the party was able to escape from the dungeons of the Daask Lords!!!

As the party re-grouped after escaping from the dungeon of the Daask Lords, Razor turned ill & collapsed!  Victoria, Medic, and even Brother Akbu tried to revive the shifter, but their efforts were in vain.  Razor's skin turned pale, then after a few moments grey.  The body began to contort and convulse violently.  The head and shoulder grew small and an extra set of grey arms began to emerge from the torso...

Session Picture: The captured Water Dragon

Miko exited the water filled underground tunnel into the ocean.  He surfaced just off the shore and made his way toward a village in the distance.  A man dressed in the uniform of a Daask Office hailed him as a friend, Gimble.  He went on to reveal that he was an agent of the King's Dark Lanterns of Breland and that he had infiltrated the Daask organization nearly two years ago.

Meanwhile, the rest of the party ran into a patrol of hobgobin thugs.  The group quickly engaged the monsters and releived them of their studded leather armor and longswords.   The party moved toward the coast & the village in the distance.  Outside the village they were spotted by Gimble and Miko.  Gimble presented the group with a another scoll of spells that he had managed to aquire from the Daask Lords.  He also informed the party that the Daask Lords were loading their ship The Water Dragon in preparation for escaping the volcano's furry.  Also, the group's equipment is likely to be on board the vessel!!!

At the docks, the group spotted The Water Dragon and made their plan for assault.  Istban cast invisibility on Swiftfist and Almorth, who snuck on board the boat and prepared to attack the Priest and Wizard.  Cession inspired the party with a delightful song, and the group charged the gnolls that were loading cargo on the docks!  The battle was fast and furrious, but the party was able to defeat the Daask Lords and now have possession of The Water Dragon!

The party searched The Water Dragon and found a cache of extrodinary items.  They divided the loot amongst themselves as the volcano violently erupted, spewing fire and ash into the sky.  The erption disturbed a quartet of marine ghouls, Lacedons, from their watery grave.  The Lacedons climbed onto the dock with hopes of having a feast of flesh.  However, Medic summoned divine powers and destroyed the creatures before they could harming anyone.

The group then set sail for Sharn with Gimble trying to guide the ship with his minimal navigation skills.  The vessel was a sail for two weeks when ominus clouds were spotted in the western sky.  By mid-day, the storm was pouring rain down upon the ship and the winds were tossing it about like a rag doll.  A light was spotted in the north east, a lighthouse!  Maybe there is a safe harbor?  As the party approached the island, the storm raged even more and Medic and Torbek assisted Gimble in trying to steer the ship.  However, their efforts were in vain as the ship crashed into the rocks!  The party disembarked and moved toward the lighthouse.  Outside the lighthouse they found piles of bones!  Inside the lighthouse the party was greeted by a warm comfortably furnushed room.  A deep ominous voice announced that the party was trapped!  Almorth moved through the east door to find a cold deteriorated room, and two SHADOWY creatures!  Torbek choose the center door and Medic prepared to open the west door!

Can Alomorth survive his encounter with the mysterious shadow creatures?  What will Torbek find behind the center door?  Is the west door trapped?  If so, will Mdeic make through the doorway in one piece?  Almorth pimped on Victoria again!  Is Swiftfist jealous?  What will happen when Swiftfist, Lady Elaydrin, Almorth, and Victoria are all in the same roome? Will the love square survive or will someone get heart punched? Will Cession write a great ballad about the love square? Istban has a dagger now.  Will he put his eyes out with it rather than watch the love square unfold?  Will Miko stand on Tobek's shoulders to get a better view of the love square?  If Medic could join in the love square, would it be a love pentagon and if so, could an artificer fashion an adamantine part big enough?

The answers to these questions and many more will be revieled on Sunday 3/ 13/05!

On the road to Saltmarsh, the party saw a road-side sign that read, "Welcome to EC6, we hope you enjoy your stay".  The party arrived in Saltmarsh and went to Angelia's house. There they found her being comforted by a friend, Melvin Dufain. Angelina explained that Melvin had worked with her recently deceased husband and had been of invaluable assistance since his untimely death two months ago. Throughout the conversation, several interesting pieces of information were discovered:

1. Angelina's son, William, was last seen playing by the well nearly 36 hours prior to the party's arrival. No signs of a struggle were found on the well traveled street. The "bucket test" was used to determine if the boy had fallen into the well.   FYI - The bucket test involves dropping a bucket into the well and if somebody yells "ouch", then there is someone in the bottom of the well. (JAY RAWKS!!!!  )

2. The last person to see young William was his best friend Timothy, whose father is a waterbearer in Saltmarsh.

3. Angelina's husband was a driver working for the merchant's guild and was killed by bandits on the road to Wroat. His wagonload of brandy was taken and he was left for dead on the road.

4. Melvin is an administrator for the merchant's guild. Part of his duties involve scheduling deliveries and coordinating shipments. Melvin is 2nd in command of the guild, reporting only to the guildmaster.

The party went to several locations within Saltmarsh to investigate and gather information, including the The Hoof-n-Mouth, Saltmarsh Cemetary, The Catherdral of the Soverign Host, and the Cathedral of the Silver Flame. Timothy's father expressed his suspicions about Melvin Dufain and told them about rumors in town said that Dufain killed Angelina's husband so that he could have her as a bride. This led the party to Dufain's house where they discovered a shrine to the Dragon Below! They party confronted Dufain about the evil shrine inf the presence of the Saltmarsh Watch. Dufian became invisible and escaped into the night!!!!

The good rogue also discovered several interesting documents locked away in Dufain's house:

1. A number of shipping documents that list driver, destination, cargo, etc. Also written on the documents, in different ink & handwritting, are the word Znir, Grimstone, and The Great Crag.

2. A scroll with a picture labeled Vandersaut Mansion and directions to get there.

In the previous session, Melvin Dufain was exposed as a worshipper of The Dragon Below, he ran from his house and disappeared into the night. The party regrouped at the Hoof-n-Mouth where they found Almorth the Bastard, along with his halfling concubine, drinking with the lovely Angelina.

Angelina pleaded with the group to continue the search for her lost son, William. So, the party followed the scroll found in Dufain's house that had a picture labeled Vandersaut Mansion and directions to get there, noting that nothing sinester was involved at all!

The found their way to the abandoned mansion and soon encountered a nasty spider hiding in a chimney, along with finding a ring encrusted with the Vandersaut crest. They found a staircase in the kitchen that led them to the second story, and another staircase to the attic. In the attic, Rogue stumbled upon a pair of cursed spirits of the slaughtered Vandersaut family along with a ring encrusted with the Vandersaut crest. The party discovered a man bound, gagged, and clad only in undergarments. After freeing the man, he introduced himself as Ned Shakeshaft, a procurement professional from Saltmarsh. He entered the house in search of loot through the back door and had only reached the kitchen when he was attacked from behind, overcome and knocked unconscious. He awoke some hours ago -- bound, gagged and stripped of his possessions. He was greatful that the party found his clothes and offered to join them to get revenge on his attackers.

Afterwards, the party decided to move their investigation to the basement.... and the session ended with hideous screams coming from the basement, as if of a soul in torment.

Welcome to 6th Level Victoria, Dane, Braland, and Aragon!!!

The following was found in the Saltmarsh Tribune:

Mournland Incursion Devastates Janwell
VATHIROND -- A horde of ghouls attacked the village of Janwell and killed scores of villagers on Orlane 19. Augmenting the marauders' strength were numerous magical conflagrations known as living spells. Among the slain were local lord Orina ir'Ghalaro and the staff of a chapel devoted to the Church of the Silver Flame. Most of the survivors were villagers who had taken shelter in a forest to the west at the first sign of trouble. The marauders included a massive construct known as a cadaver collector. The name seems to be something of a misnomer, however, since the creature didn't limit its harvest to corpses. Breland's Parliament plans to discuss putting more soldiers on Breland's border with the Mournland.  Periodic incursions from the Mournland are a fact of life in far eastern Breland.

The party travelled along the lightning rail to Vathinrond, then purchased horses for their journey to Janwell.  They arrived in Janwell just before dusk, where they found a priest of the Silver Flame hiding in the ruins.  He was from Vathinrond and travelled to Janwell to assist the survivors... except he hasn't found any!  He had been in Janwell for a day and a half and only seen a few scattered people in the distance.  They ran away as soon as they caught site of the priest.

As the party conversed with the priest, they heard a massive pounding coming from the north.  Soon, a massive Cadaver Collector entered the small town and the fight was on like donky kong.  Dane was down to 2 hit points after the creature trampled through him and Victoria to get to the priest.  The poor priest didn't stand a chance against the awesome Cadaver Collector, and he was soon impaled on a spike that protruded from the creature's back.

So, a monty haul of XP from two extraordinary battles. The aftermath yielded the following:

Cadaver Collector/Church Ruins
Light Steel Shield with the Silver Flame "logo"
2 Jugs of Goodberry Wine (5 doses per jug, 8hp of healing per dose)
30 Units of Iron Rations

Karrnathi Zombies & Skeletons
23 masterwork breastplates
41 Karrnathi Scimitars
2 Composite Long Bows
36 Arrows

Karrnathi Leader
Breastplate
2 Maces
Karrnathi Helmet

Note, this does not include any "valuables" Jacobian may have "found" while he was "looking" for townsfolk.
That was a fun session guys! Thanks!!!

11/20/05 EC9 The Mournland Incursion (Part 2)
2,475xp for all characters:
Victoria (Human Cleric) 19,017 + 2,475 = 21,492 Total XP

Aragon (Elf Fighter) 16,200 + 2,475 = 18,675 Total XP

The party followed the massive tracks of the Cadaver Collector into the Dead-Grey Mists of the Mournland. Braland made a few "strategic" turns in the mist, but he led the party safely through. Soon, the party discovered the remains of the town of Nerel, which was once a fortified Cyre trading post. Seige equipment and corpses littered the valley surrounding the town. The party stopped to search the ruins of a catapult and some dead hobgoblins, only to discover that they were really SPELLSTITCHED HOBGOBLINS!!!

The party moved on to the walls of Nerel, where they found massive holes pounded into the fortifications of the town. Huge boulders had smashed through the walls and any defenders upon or behind them. Braland scaled the wall to get a better view of the town. From his perch, he spotted four main buildings among the ruins and rubble. All the buildings were damaged except a two-story round domed building, which turned out to be a temple to to Dol Arrah, the lawful good goddess of good, law, sun, and war. The party fought a dark yellow ooze and its oozelets to find a secret staircase in the temple. Below they found a golden statue of Dol Arrah and a spectre! However, Victoria repelled the creature. (DM note: Make undead stronger next time!)

The party moved on to another main building, which turned out to be a former Cyre Military Barracks. They fought several Karnathi Skeletons and defeated a cleric who cursed them while they were engaged in combat.

On the cleric, the party found:
Masterwork Light Crossbow
Silver Light Bolts (x18)
Masterwork Shortspear
Large Steel Shield
Splint Mail
Scroll [divine, caster level 3; Doom; Invisibility to Animals; Heat Metal]

Also, the party found 30 masterwork scimitars in the weapon shop.

2,000 bonus xp to Victoria & Jacobian for their excellent
background stories!

The party foiled a sacrificial ceremony as a cleric of the Dragon Below. The intended victim turned out to be a sorcerer named Blaze who was abducted from Janwell by the Karnnathi skeletons. He was in Janwell visiting his cousin, Ramone, when the attacks occurred. He had been held in the military barracks of Nerel for days. He has heard countless screams of torture and agony coming from the former barraks that now serves as a temple to the Dragon Below.

The party found a room piled with corpses. Blaze identified the bodies as some of the villagers from Janwell, but some of the faces he did not recognize. So, Blaze set the building on fire and the party left.

While smoke billowed from the barraks building, the group moved on to the largest building in the complex, a temple dedicated to Dol Dorn. Immediately, the party found evidence that the temple had been defaced and vandalized. All references to Dol Dorn were now covered by symbols of the Dragon Below.

Inside the temple, the adventurers discovered an amoeboid-like form of life, composed of all mouths and eyes. The abomination was resting on the altar of Dol Dorn! It spat at and blinded Dane, but the others jumped into slay the creature.

In the lower level of the temple, the party encountered four grotesque creatures with misshapen heads that consisted mostly of a single blinking eye. The creatures each had six long, slender, spike-tipped limbs. After these abominations were dealt with, the party discovered a SECRET DOOR!!!

12/31/05 SK1 Adventures in Vathirond
5 Player Characters - 4 Story Lines by the end of the session!!! That's a first for me. Lots of roleplaying with a little combat.

Memorable Quotes from the Session:
"Thraner"
"Flamer"
"I thought he would surrender"

The heroes investigated the murder of Angel, a courtesan, at Olivia's Cabaret in the Caravan District. First, Jacobian made it clear that he was NOT involved with the death as it would only take one stab for him to get the job done and that 50 is just overkill.

The PCs went to Olivias Cabaret where they met the madam. She explained that the cabaret employed ten girls last week. Now, one was dead and two had quit for fear of their lives. In exchange for revenge upon the Annas killer, the madam offered a lifetime of free entertainment and any special favors from her list of influential customers. She went on to explain that she suspected the Sena Family was responsible for the brutal murder. She believes that the murder was an attempt to drive her out of business, as she is the biggest rival for their brothel in the Guildhall District, Mama Rosalies.

The party started their investigation by speaking with Watch Commander Captain DeMartini. He was dismissive of the groups interest in the case, but reluctantly informed them that corporal Blotzer was investigating. The group found corporal Blotzer on patrol and asked about the case. He didnt provide much new information, so the party split up. Dane and Medic went back to speak with Captain DeMartini using a zone of truth spell. Aragon sent a message to Saltmarsh for his belongings to be shipped to Vathirond. Victoria went undercover and was hired as an entertainer at Mama Rosalies. Jacobian gathered some information about the Sena Family and discovered that Carlos Fish Market, in the Guildhall District, was a good place to make contact with the Sena Family.

Dane and Medic - Spoke with Captain DeMartini under the influence of a zone of truth spell and discovered that he was in fact on the payroll of the Sena Family for the last two years. He had been instructed to offer a 250gp were geld for the death of Anna and to instruct the madam to forget about the issue. Dane & Medic entered into aggressive negotiations with the captain with Medic scoring a critical hit with his halberd for 40+ points of damage! Needless to say, Captain DeMartini was dead by the end of the conversation!!! Dane and Medic escaped through a window and made their way to the New Tronish District to hide out until dark, where they made their way back to Olivias Cabaret. There, the madam offered refuge in a house located in Almar Junction, just outside of Vathirond.

With the death of the watch commander, Aragon applied for the open position. A move that the DM did not anticipate! The clerk at the civic building seemed less than enthused about his application, so Aragon tried to get an appointment with General D.L. irRoth. The generals assistant said it would be at least a couple of weeks before he could get an appointment. Aragon plans to check back the next day!

Jacobian went to Carlos Fish Market where he found two identical shaped and opposite buildings. He chose the left building, where he found a fat greasy man named Carlo. Jacobian told him that he was seeking the Shadows and Carlo instructed him to return after business hours that night.

Jacobian asked around about Carlo and the fish market and discovered that Carlos wife divorced him. The Lord Mayor awarded her half of his holdings. She moved into the opposite structure and Carlo now has to see his ex-wife across the way trying to undersell his half of the fishy goods. Its rumored that she pays favors to the local fishermen for cheaper prices and thats beginning to threaten Carlos share of the market. He has made up for it though by joining the Sena Family and is rumored to have plans for his ex-wife.

Jacobian returned to find Carlo and two other men waiting for him. One man was older and was dressed in brown robes. The other was a middle-aged man dressed in brown robes. They middle-aged man told Jacobian that the resident next door was a thorn in the side of certain friends. They would like to see the problem just go away with no body, no blood, and no evidence left behind. If that happened, then his friends would be most grateful and future jobs would be handsomely rewarded.

Later that night, just past the stroke of midnight, Jacobian climbed to the second story window where he found a woman sleeping. He struck quickly, and wrapped the body in a riding cloak. Under the cover of darkness, he made his way through the streets of Vathirond and down the road to Riverton. There he disposed of the body in the chum dealers tank.

The next day, he went to visit Carlo. Carlo was very pleased to see Jacobian and told him that the city watch had already questioned Carlo about his ex-wifes disappearance. Carlo had an air-tight alliby and they had no evidence linking him to the disappearance. Carlo invited Jacobian to join him at the Dancing Dolgrim Inn for a drink.

Jacobian met Carlo and the older man in brown robes at the Dancing Dolgrim. They were celebrating with a few female companions at a table in the corner of the taproom. The man in brown robes congratulated Jacobian on a job well done and told him that his friends were very pleased. Jacobian showed the man the morning newspaper, whose headline announced the death of Captain DeMartini. Jacobian went on to say that his associates were responsible for the Watch Commanders death. The man shrugged it off and showed him the previous days newspaper that reported 17 assaults, 8 armed robberies, and 6 rapes in Highrock District. The older man replied that his subordinates get out of hand sometimes too, and not to worry about it. Now onto new business, he has another job for Jacobian! In two days time, Jacobian is to guard a shipment of cargo to its destination in exchange for 10,000gp. The older man said that if Jacobian trusted his associates, that he would offer them 1,000gp each for their services.

1/15/06 SK2 Decent Below Vathirond
The party finished up their business in Vathirond and arrived at the Forge (Building #126) at the appropriate time. The Sena Family contact was waiting for them there. He led them through a series of secret doors and into the depths of the Vathirond Sewers. Finally, the group came to a "T" intersection where the Sena Contact opened another secret door.

Inside was a cerimonial room, Jacobian instantly recognized it as a room used by a thieves guild. A large man dressed in black studded leather armor and mask was carrying a halberd and standing guard to a set of double doors. The Sena Contact asked him if his master was ready and the guard answered yes and opened the double doors.

The next room was a strange scene indeed. Three other guards, dressed and armed the same, watched over a group of 25 humans, dwarves, shifters, elves, and halflings. Two other figures were in discussion as the party entered. The first was a large man dressed as the guards, but his leather armor and mask were blood red. The second man was of average height and build and wore a full set of black leather armor and carried a great double headed battle axe. The smaller man was clearing of some importance to the others.

The Sena Contact instructed the group that they were to escort the "cargo" to the Duergar city of Nith. The last shipment was intercepted by a vicious band of deep orcs and that must not happen again. A duergar named Wepnir would act as guide through the caverns of Khyber. The handlers would deal with the cargo. The PC's were responsible for protecting the handlers and cargo. After some discussions, the party decended into the mysterious caverns of Khyber.

The duergar led the party through several winding tunnels and confussing intersections. After several hours of travel, the clicking noises were heard from a side passage. The group stopped and the PC's investigated the noise. They found a swarm of Giant Bombardier Beetles devouring the remains of an elf. The party quickly defeated the beetles and noticed a pale white glow on the creatures. The same pale white glow was noticed on the cave walls as well.

The journey continued and several hours later, the party heard the sound of rushing water. They passed through a pile of fallen rocks and rubble to find a huge cavern with a very fast moving stream cutting through the bottom of a 40 deep chasm. The violently swirling water often exploded against the treacherous rocks, making the air in the cavern is moist and humid. A 5 wide bridge made of stone spans the 30 chasm. The bridge was wet and often splashed by water from below. A stiff breeze blew through the cavern, with occasional gusts of stronger wind.

The party started crossing the bridge and Victoria lost her footing as a wave of water crashed into her from the river below. She would have surely fallen to her death if it were not for Medic jumping in to save her. Dane and Bregolan pulled them both up using the rope that Medic and Dane were using to assist the party across the bridge.

Once they were on the other side of the bridge, the party heard screams from the handlers as a huge centipede emerged from the rubble and attacked! Dane, Victoria, and Aragon charged over the bridge to slay the beast. Just then, an arrow hit Bregolan from behind! He turned to see the two corridors filled with deep orcs!!!

Dane charged BACK across the bridge and engaged the orcs of the deep that were spewing from the right tunnel. Bregolan engaged the orcs in the left tunnel, and Jacobian retreated across the bridge to provide crossbow fire.

Dane fell asleep from the ill effects of a deep orc battle horn. Bregolan cast an entagle spell and sussessfully detained most of the orcs. However, several orcs from the right tunnel landed terrible blows to Bregolan and he fell to the cave floor. Jacobian fell asleep from the ill effects of the deep orc war drum! Victoria and Aragon defeated the centipede and moved forward to attack the orcs who had managed to make it across the bridge. Aragon made it to Jacobian's side and woke him up.

While defending the bridge, Medic fell to the spears and axes of the deep orcs! Dane and Victoria were able to reach their fallen commrades and aid them back to consiousness. The orcs were finally defeated, however danger still existed! Aragon was crossing the bridge and lost his footing on the slick surface. He plunged into the rapids of the undergound river and was swiftly carried away!!!

Did Aragon survive the fall?
How will Dane deal with this most evil mission?
Have these people REALLY commited crimes against Breland?
If not, how can the "cargo" be set free?
How many rounds has Jacobian been watching Dane?
If Victoria's vission came to pass, what does that mean about the vissions of the other party members?

The answers to these questions and many more will be unveiled at the next session!

1/22/06 SK3 The Cavern of the Deep Pit

The gaming schedule pulled off a sneak attack! Seth didn't have his Star Wars stuff & I didn't have the Eberron stuff!!! So, Sgt. Barnes and I journeyed to Castle Kenwig to grab my gear. We ended up playing a quick improvisational session. I suggest we use the calander on the message boards OR put one up in the shop.

The regular session is still scheduled for next week at 3pm.

Wepnir, the duergar guide, told the group that the left tunnel led to a cavern where Aragon would likely wash up. After searching the orcs for loot, see party treasure list, they moved to find Aragon. Dane entered the cave to see Aragon lying face down in the cavern. Standing next to him was ALMORTH THE BASTARD!!! Almorth decided to go adventuring with another group from Saltmarsh, but Xorns killed the rest of the party. Almorth escaped by jumping in the rushing waters and ended up in cave the same way Aragon did.

Wepnir also told the party that both tunnels lead to The Cavern of the Deep Pit. The deep pit leads to the abyss and the cavern is a very dangerous place, but it is the only way to reach the Duergar City of Nith.

The party cautiously moved through the cavern, when three gargoyles swooped down from their perch high in the cavern ceiling. The party defeated the gargoyles, but turned to find a new problem. The combat had disturbed four Abyssal Eviscerators!!!

The fiends were finally destroyed and the party was moving the "cargo" through the great cavern as the session ended. 1,000xp for everyone!

After resting for a while, the group continued their journey in the strange underworld of Eberron, Khyber. The passages began to narrow and a musky stench filled the air. Wepnir, the duergar guide, noticed two piles of rubble and rock that were not there as he travelled through this way only days ago.

Just then most of the party, except Honaker  , spotted movement ahead. Nine vile troglodytes and one very large, very nasty looking troglodyte were coming down the passageway. The party lept into action!

Aragon fell ill to the effects of the stench and violently threw up all over the cave. Dane charged and rambled on about a flame (big surprise?). Afterwards, noise could be heard coming from a side tunnel. Dane & Aragon went to investigate and soon returned with news of TROGLODYTES IN PLATE MAIL!!!

Bregolan used his entagle spell again, and trapped most of the smelly beasts in the side cavern. The group delt with the remainder very quickly and moved the "cargo" forward.

Several hours march later, the group found a pit of Ankhegs. The pit started out 60' tall and the stairs wound half way around until the pit was a only 30' tall. Several party members shot arrows into the pit at the poor defenseless Ankhegs, killing one. Just past the pit, the rough and jagged walls of the caves changed into smooth and tight dwarven stonework. Half way up the stairs, a pit trap dropped several party members into a chute that led dirctly into the ANKHEG PIT!!!

After defeating the acid spitting beasts, the party climbed out of the pit and continued on their journey to the Duergar city of Nith to deliver the "cargo".
