Take a left tun, and find you way through the sidestreets to Montgomery Ave, near the Ohio River. Head back west and you will cross under two rail bridges. Roght after the second one, turn right and park. Here is the Kentucky side of the K&I Bridge. You can get some neat shots from the nearby Ohio River walk and bike path. Fairly safe area. HUGE yard. switching can be seen, as well as trains heading in and out. To get to the north end drive past the bridge to National Turnpike. FLOYD STREET NS & CSX FREQS 160.590 (NS), 161.370 (CSX). Take I-65 to Eastern Parkway. Take Floyd Street southward. Just after you cross the railroad tracks, take a right and park in the parking lot. CSX and NS cross at grade here. It is not recomended to go up to the diamond as the railroad police patrol the area frequently. They have better things to do than have to be bothered by railfans. The RR property is also not cleary marked. The Parking Lot is part of the Papa Johns stadium. The U of L campus is also nearby. Eastern Parkway overpass also allows some views of the crossing. If you hit it right, you can see a bunch of trains. It is rumored that a pedestrian overpass will be built right over the junction. FRANKFORT AVE AND POINTS EAST CSX FREQ 161.370 This senic part of Louisville offers some nice CSX action. Take I-64 east to Grinstead Drive, head north, or left if coming out of town. Follow to the end, take a left and you are on Frankfort Ave. Plent of parking and places to chose from. Follow it eastward, it begins to slink away from the CSX line. But after you cross I-264 east take the first left, and the road comes back to the railroad in St. Matthews, and Lydon. You can follow the CSX line all the way to Anchorage. There the lines split, one towards Lexington, the other towards Cincinatti. DOWNTOWN LOUISVILLE - PENSY BRIDGE The old lift bridge is well seen from anywhere along the riverfront of Louisville or even on the Indiana side. If you see the bridge in the down position, a train is likely. If you cross into Indiana, find your way to the Falls of the Ohio park, for another look at the bridge. In Louisville follow the local streets downtown along the river. Just after crossing under the L&I take a right and follow until you find a break in the floodwall. You can access the south end of the bridge here all on public property. |
