Kentucky Dam / Kentucky Lake area
A Union Pacific run through coal train rumbles accros the Kentucky Dam on the north end of Kentucky Lake. July 2000.

KENTUCKY DAM AREA
The Kentucky Dam is a unique area where the railroad actually cross the dam along side the highway. Though not a hot spot, a train on the dam is worth the wait.

The Vulcan Industries transfer facility is the destination of most of these trains, many are stopping in to emply coal and or pick up rocks. The facility is huge and easily seen from the local roads.

HOW TO GET THERE
Take I-24 west to Exit 31. Head south on Kentucky 453 to US 62. You will begin to see the Vulcan transfer facility. Head west on US 62 to the dam. There are pull over / observation areas where you can park to look at the lake or wait for the trains.

Usually the UP train would arrive every day in the AM, load and or unload and head back about 4-5 hours later. A scanner is good to have to try to figure out train movements.

Paducah Kentucky is about 30 miles up the road where PAL ends and where you can find IC, CSX, and others.
