There is the potential for a major winter storm affecting
Kentucky next weekend.
However it is much to far away to forcast such at this time. It
is advisable to monitor
Local forcast over the next several days for this development.
Check out the new items at bottom of this page, current conditions
Nationwide and local forcast for areas of special interest.
The following information is
taken from the Climate
Prediction Center and is valid beginning 2/22/02:
SYNOPSIS:
Changes in the upper level flow are expected to bring some unseasonably cold
air into the eastern two thirds of the nation for the end of the month. As this
cold high pressure air mass slides southward along the eastern slopes of the
Rockies it will couple with low pressure developing over the southern Rockies
and produce strong upslope winds and the chance of heavy upslope snows over the
eastern slopes of the mountains. High downslope winds are possible over
southern California, increasing the wildfire danger there on Monday Feb. 25. A
strong storm is expected to bring high onshore winds to the southern coast of
Alaska on Feb. 22 through 24.
THREATS
·
Long-term drought continues over
portions of the interior Northwest and northern High Plains, the upper Rio
Grande Valley in Texas and New Mexico, and over a significant portion of the
East Coast. All but the Rio Grande area should experience further relief during
the Assessment period.
For
Friday February 22 - Sunday February 24: A strong storm is expected to bring
high onshore winds to the south coast of Alaska on Feb. 22 through 24. Farther
east a change in the jet stream is expected to steer a cold high pressure air
mass southward along the eastern slopes of the Rockies, beginning on Saturday
Feb. 23. Along with a low pressure system developing over the southern Rockies,
this is expected to produce strong upslope winds accompanied by the chance for
heavy snow along the eastern slopes of the northern and central Rockies for
Feb. 23 and 24.
For Monday February 25 -
Tuesday March 5: High upslope winds and possible heavy snow are expected to
progress southward over the eastern slopes of the central and southern Rockies
on Monday Feb. 25. With the possible building of high pressure in the Great
Basin, high downslope winds may occur across southern California on Feb. 25,
increasing the wildfire danger there. As the cold air mass starting out over
the Northern Plains spreads southward and eastward, much below normal
temperatures are indicated for the central and eastern portions of the nation
for the final few days of February.
