Outhouse Experience

The Rooster & The Outhouse
Sundays at Grandma's will always be a great memory. After church
alot of the family would gather for a big dinner. There wasn't enough room for all of us
to fit at the table so the kids in the family had to wait till the adults were done.We
always looked forward to getting older so we could sit at the table with the adults.
There always seemed to be tons and tons of dishes to wash! And yes ... that was left up to the kids most of the time too. The oldest or next to the oldest usually. Convieiently, especially after a big family dinner I "just HAD" to go to the bathroom. Grabbing my stomach ... I headed outside to the outhouse ... with someone shouting ..."hurry up so you can help with the dishes"....
As I sat there in the outhouse, I picked up the Sears and Roebuck catalog and began looking through it. Trying to kill some time hoping the dishes would be done. Finally I thought I had been there long enough and opened the door slowly and stuck my head out looking around for "The Rooster"!! I hated that ole rooster...every once in awhile he'd catch me heading for the outhouse and try to flog me. I'd run crying to Grandma and she would make one of the older kids go with me to stand guard.
This time ... I was all alone. Thinking everything was safe, I began to slowly step out and as I turned to close the door ... the ole Rooster come half flying and half running in my direction squawking and flapping his wings. Just as I jumped back inside and slammed the door I heard that ole rooster hit the door! I was hopeing that dumb ole rooster had knocked himself out, but I wasn't that lucky. Time after time I tried coming out of that house and time after time that rooster would try to flog me. I began crying and hollering "help ..... help!!" Finally after what seemed like a lifetime to me my Uncle Gerald came to my rescue and ran that ole rooster off hollering threats at him ... "get outta here or we'll eat you for dinner!"
I was never so happy to see anyone in my life as I was him! As he chased the rooster away .... I ran for the safety of Grandma's house.
This site "Ye Ole Outhouse" has some great pictures of old outhouses.
