10-31-01

It’s Halloween. This date has always been known to bring kids to school in face paint and costumes. Teachers give out candy. There’s an air of excitement. Kids rush home from school only to leave once again for trick-or-treating. However, this year, nothing is the same.

This year, Halloween comes almost two months after our lives were forever changed. This year, there is the threat of another terrorist attack. This year, there is the fear of Anthrax added to the fear of poisoned candy. This year, strangers are even scarier. This year, parents won’t let their kids trick-or-treat.

When I woke up today, it didn’t occur to me that it was Halloween. It seemed like a normal day. I got up at 6AM, ate breakfast, got dressed, went to the bus stop. It wasn’t until I got to school that I realized it was Halloween. My school imposed a no-costume rule for today. They said that in light of recent events, it wasn’t proper.

I think it’s sad. We shouldn’t have to deal with these kinds of things. We should be allowed to enjoy this holiday. It was created for kids. Yet now, because of the sick, sick individuals that attacked us, the holiday is ruined. Or is it?

In my opinion (that’s what this is right?), we should keep the Halloween spirit alive. No, I don’t think we should go trick-or-treating. There will be more wackos and more danger than normal. But we should still keep in out hearts that this day, 10-31-01, is Halloween.
