Chapter Seven
Aishiteru
Relena and the four gundam pilots waited impatiently in the waiting room. Hopefully, Heeros diagnosis wouldnt be serious. Relena was extremely nervous. The hospital had that dead sterile feel to it, and it sort of made her think of impending doom. A tall doctor entered the room and spoke in a deep voice.

Miss Darlin? he called. The party of five stood and walked over to where he was and entered a hallway that lead to many rooms. As they walked toward Heeros room, Relena asked a question that spoke for all of them.

     Doctor, how is Heero?

To be straight with you, not good. His brain went into overload because of what went on with you and him, and it was too much for his mind to take. Hes sort of in a psychological coma. He entered the coma in a fairly serious state, so it complicates things a bit. Theres really no way to tell how long he will stay asleep.

Relena and the gundam pilots let all of that sink in as they reached an elevator and stepped in. They went up a few floors before they stepped into another hallway. The doctor lead them to the fourth door down and pointed to it. This is your friends room. Hes been asleep since you brought him here. Theres really no telling when hell wake up. If he does, then hell make a full recovery. If he doesnt within the next week, then, he might be beyond our help. Im sorry. Just pray that hell wake up so we can help him to make a full recovery. The doctor left then, leaving the five to the room.

Relena put her hands over her mouth. Her dream had a possibility of coming true. Heero? Die? No. He was a fighter. He wouldnt die this easily.

The five entered the room to see Heero asleep on the bed. Many machines were hooked up to his body. His shirt was hanging over a chair rather than on him and a bandage was wrapped around his chest where the mind star had been. The five people were taken aback at the sight of the man on the hospital bed. He was usually seen as an intimidating sight, but not now.

Relena stared at him. This wasnt fair. Heero hadnt done anything wrong. He had been working so hard to make things right, but now this creep came and did this to him. She didnt want him to have to remember any of the things that went on during the war. But it seemed as if things would never be very good for Heero.

Relena approached his bed and touched his face with the back of her hand. Im sorry. Its my fault youre in here. My fault youre fighting for your life. Im so sorry, Heero. She whispered.

Duo walked up behind her. He put a comforting hand on her shoulder and squeezed it lightly. Dont blame yourself, Relena. It was the only way to bring him back to us. You couldnt have done anything to prevent it. Besides, God-willing, he will wake up. All we need to do is have a little faith.

How do you know? What do you think faith can do? Its just some word that means to believe in what cant be done. She said quietly, tears forming in her eyes.

Thats not true. I may not be the best Christian in the world, but I do know that God works in incredible ways. He allows certain things to happen only to help us. Weather it seems so or not. Now, I may not think that at times, but I know its the truth. Now settle down. The only thing we can do now is pray. He said.

Relena wasnt totally convinced, but she nodded.

Six days passed, and Heero still had not stirred. Relena was burying herself in her work, she bearly slept, and she and the other four made regular visits to the hospital. Milliardo even came sometimes. He wasnt sure why, but he was beginning to feel a respect for the younger man.

The seventh day came and Relena and the others prepared to make their regular visit to Heeros room. Relena slipped her shoe onto her foot and looked around the room. She had been doing a lot of reflecting lately. What would she do if Heero didnt wake up? How would she cope with it?

Her eyes found a small stuffed animal sitting on her pillow. It was the teddy bear Heero had given her. She picked it up, and squeezed it in a hug.
Oh, Heero please wake up. Small tears dropped onto the bears head as she began to cry. She finally put the bear down and headed out.

Relena walked down the halls of the hospital with the other four. This was Heeros last chance to wake up, and she couldnt take it if he didnt. The four reached his room and made their way inside.  Things were exactly the way they had been a week ago when they had first come in.

Relena took a seat next to Heeros bed and took his hand. There was warmth there, and Relena silently prayed that it would remain. She wasnt sure if praying would help, but she decided to give it a try. Silently she prayed that he would wake up. She had to tell him that she loved him. She wanted him to know that so badly.

She stayed by his bed for hours on end, waiting to hear a change in his pulse or brain waves. None came. It was getting dark and despair set in Relenas heart. She was startled as a five-minute warning was spoken over the loudspeaker. Visiting hours were over in five minutes.

Duo stood, and looked over at Heero. Im sorry, buddy.

The other four stood and headed out the door. Trowa stopped and turned back to Relena. Relena. Come on. We did everything we could. We need to get going. He said softly.

Ill be out there in a minute. She said through tears. Trowa nodded and left. Relena stared at Heeros limp form. He was dead. Or he would be within the next day or so. She would never see those beautiful prussian blue eyes of his again. Never.

She stood, walked over and knelt down next to Heeros head. Tears were now streaming down her cheeks. She stroked his face gently before moving her hand to place it in his limp one. She squeezed it lightly before standing. She was about to pull her hand away when she swore that she felt his close around hers for a brief moment. Excitement and shock filled her senses.

R-R-Re-le-na. Came a hoarse whisper. She whirled around to see Heeros eyes slowly opening. He turned to look at her, and smiled a bit.

HEERO!! she screamed. She wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him, tears flowing freely down her face. Heero lifted a weak hand and put it on her back, doing his best to return the hug. The door burst open, and the other four gundam pilots walked in. Their expressions all brightened when they saw that he was awake.

Welcome back, Heero. I gotta say, you had us all pretty worried there. This was the last chance you had to wake up, or you wouldve been beyond the help of the doctors. We were all worried you had kicked the bucket! Duo said, humor evident in his voice.

Relena released him and sat down in the chair beside him. How are you feeling? she asked quietly. Tears still flowed freely down her cheeks.

Heero looked at her, his eyes half closed. Im feeling better and more awake as time goes by. However, I really hate hospitals.

Relena smiled at him. Hospitals gave a bad lasting impression on Heero. The first time he was taken to a hospital was during the war and he was strapped down to a metal table so people could monitor him. Well, at least youre not strapped to the table.

Heero gave what Relena had to take as a weak smile. He laid his head back and looked at the ceiling.

How much do you remember? Relena asked.

Not much. Everything after Shakaju pressed that cloth to my mouth is pretty much a blur he answered.

Maybe its for the best that you dont remember much. Relena smiled weakly.

He sighed heavily. Did I hurt you? he asked slowly.

Relena looked up at him. What?

Did I hurt you? Did Shakaju make me hurt you? he asked again, still staring at the ceiling.

Relena looked at the floor. I-It wasnt your fault. Shakaju was controlling you. Im fine now.

Heero turned to her. He cringed as he thought of what he might have done to her. What did I do? he asked evenly.

Thats not important. The fact is, even though Shakaju pulled the Perfect Machine back out of you,
you Heero still protected me. Relena smiled.

Heeros eyes gained an air of seriousness. Tell me what I did, Relena.

Relena opened her mouth to speak, but another deep voice beat her to it. You backhanded her across the face, beat the life out of the other gundam pilots, and then gave me three cracked ribs as well as two broken ones.

Heero looked to the doorway. Milliardo Peacecraft stood at the door to his hospital room, a glare painted on his face.

Heero didnt look worried at all. I guess your hear to give me an earful of the fact that I shouldve been able to resist that star.

Milliardo snorted. Much as Id like to, I wont.

Suddenly, a doctor walked in and told everyone that visiting hours were over. That was when he saw that Heero was awake. He ran up to him and began scanning every machine that was hooked up to the former gundam pilot. The six visitors said quick good-byes and left for home, joy and excitement filling their hearts.

Hello, my name is Relena Peacecraft. Were here to see Heero Yuy. Relena said to the nurse at the front desk. She, Milliardo, and the four gundam pilots were there to see Heero about five days after he woke up.

The nurse gave a confused look. Heero Yuy? Heero Yuy. She muttered his name a few times under her breath as if to try and remember who he was. Finally, a lightbulb seemed to go on as her face brightened. Oh! Heero Yuy! He was the one who was in that coma for a week, right?

Relena nodded, uncertainly. The nurse continued. He was released this morning. Hes gone.

Relena cocked her head. Oh well, thats great! Thanks! the six walked out of the hospital. Relena spoke first. Im surprised that Heero didnt tell us that he was being released.

Duo laughed. Cant say I am. Thats just like that guy. He doesnt like to draw any attention to himself. One of his hobbies seems to be disappearing without a trace.

Relena smiled. Well, I think its time I stopped chasing after that guy. Hes probably getting annoyed with me.

Trowa smiled, amused. What are you talking about?

Relena raised an eyebrow. Quatre spoke next. You can tell how much he cares for you. You need to go and tell him how you feel.

But what if he doesnt feel the same way? I could really wound his social life. She asked quickly.

Duo snorted humorously. Listen, if someone telling him how they feel is wounding his social life, then he deserves it. He needs to learn how to be human again, and I think you can teach him.

Relena smiled brightly. Thanks you guys. The four men nodded. Except for one grumpy guy who crossed his arms, and made himself deaf to everything they were saying.

Heero plopped down in his armchair and sighed. The bodyguard job was over, the headaches, nausea, and swirled vision had stopped, and now things were just as they had been before. Well, sort of.

Heero thought about the times he had spent with Relena. The gymnastics and the nightmare especially. When Heero caught Relena, he noticed how she didnt ask to be put down. She just stayed there, looking into his eyes. He thought he saw something flicker in her eyes. He didnt know what it was or recognize it, but he wouldnt get his hopes up. The nightmare she had was something too. As soon as he had pulled her close to him, she immediately calmed down. Heero rolled his eyes and looked at his arms.
Its probably just because Im really strong. Thats all.

He was about to go to get some breakfast when a knock sounded on his door. He looked over at the door to his apartment.
What the? Who would be coming over here? He wondered. He walked over and opened the door to reveal Miss Relena. She wore Jeans and a tied off flannel shirt. Heero thought she looked cute.

Heero eyed her skeptically. What are you doing down here? he wondered.

Well, I kind of forgot something. She answered, blushing.

You mean when we came here to test the food? he asked, kind of densely.

Well, no. Relena smiled a bit. I needed to tell you something. She entered the apartment and closed the door behind her. Heero kind of backed up, not knowing what she had in mind.

And what is that? Heero wondered, getting kind of worried about what the answer would be.

    Well
This is it. Im going to tell him. If I dont take this chance now, I wont get another one. Even if he doesnt feel the same way, I need to tell him. Well, Here goes. Relena took a deep breath. Well, this past few weeks have been very meaningful to me. Having you around made me really think about some things. And really the only thing I can say is aishiteru Heero.

Heero stared into space. She loved him?

Relena saw his reaction and headed for the door. She was about to open it when a strong hand grabbed her wrist. She turned around to see Heero looking straight back at her. Im sorry Heero. I didnt actually think I could say it! she cried.

Heero pulled her close to him, not in a hug, but just kept her from opening the door. He put a hand to the side of her face. Relena aishiteru too, but

Relenas spirits went through the roof. He loved her back?! However, what was the but for? But, what?

But, I dont have a right to. He answered resisting the urge to look away.

What do you mean by that? she wondered gently.

Well youre an angel, Relena. And angel for pacifism. And Im well, Im a demon of the battlefield. Ive killed so many people while youve saved so many through your pacifism. I dont have the right to love you!

Heero, yes you do. You are free to do whatever you want to. Dont worry about our social standings. Were human beings. Not symbols.

Heero seemed to take what she was saying, but he wasnt fully convinced. Besides, Relena, you, me? No, I dont think so. Im a former soldier working as a bodyguard. You are a famous peace-promoting leader! It just wouldnt work.

Relena smiled and shook her head. Heero, I have something else to tell you. Heero looked at her. I dont care about my rank. All I care about is you. Aishiteru Heero, and I cant change that.

Youd give up your rank as Vice Foreign Minister for me??

In a second if I had to.

    But why?

Thats what love is. You were willing to give up your life to save me, werent you?

    Well, yes.

    Why was that?

Thats what love is. Sacrifice for the one you love.

Relena smiled at him. She slowly approached him put her hands on his chest, stood on her toes, and captured his lips with hers in a kiss. Heero stood there for a moment before he succumbed to the kiss. Her elbows were on his shoulders, one arm was across the back of his neck, and the other hand was raking through his hair. Heero had one arm around her waist, his other elbow was on her waist and his left hand was on her right shoulder, holding her close.

Heero was the one to break the kiss and pull Relena in to a hug. Se set her head on his shoulder and received his hug. They stood there for the longest time before Relenas body began to feel heavy. Heero pulled away a bit to see what was wrong. Relena looked like she was falling asleep.

Heero smiled faintly. You look exhausted.

Relena smiled back as she tried to stand a bit. She stood, but her legs were shaky. Sorry.

Heero easily scooped her up in his arms and cradled her head against his chest. I know. Duo told me you hadnt been doing anything besides working. You even stopped sleeping almost altogether. You must be tired. Heero seemed to have been saying this to himself. Relena was fast asleep.

Heero walked over to a couch and sat down. He laid Relena across the couch, putting her head in his lap. He ran a hand through her golden hair, then folded his arms across his chest, bowed his head, and closed his eyes. Protecting her as he had always done. Though this time, there was something different about the way he did. He had one thing on his mind.

Aishiteru, Relena.

Heero could almost hear Relenas unconscious reply.
Aishiteru, Heero.
Kitty~chan: Awwwwwwwwwww, that wash sho shweet!

     Heero: Hn... whatever.

     Kitty~chan: Well, that's all folks!
Sorry I had to say that!:P Anyways, don't give up on me because there are still so many more to come!

Trowa: Unfortunately for all of you.

Kitty~chan: What's that supposed to mean?!?! *scratches two long red sratches on Trowa's face*

Quatre: Well, now that the story's finished, I came out the only one that hasn't been clawed upon! *smiles*

Kitty~chan: I can fix that! *chases screaming Quatre away*

Heero: Well, that's all for now! Bye!

    *Screen fades to black.*
