Chapter Three
Bullets of Realization
Relena sat at her desk, working on the huge amounts of paperwork she had ahead of her. She hadnt known exactly how long it would be, but she knew it was going to be a while. So she told Heero to get some rest.

He sat in his chair by the window, arms folded, head bowed, and eyes closed in a dreamless sleep. Relena glanced over at him. He was so cool!

Her thoughts were disturbed by a knock on her office door. She told the person to come in out of instinct, and in walked her brother, a file folder tucked under his arm. She smiled and said a friendly Hello Milliardo. Before returning to her work.

Milliardo looked over at Heero in disgust. Then looked at his sister. How can you stand to be around him all the time? Arent you afraid of what he could do to you?

Relena shook her head and looked at her brother, smiling gently. Milliardo, I have full confidence in that man. You know very well that I love him, and I hope he loves me back, but thats not the point. The point is that I know what he could do to me, but I have full confidence that he would never do anything to hurt me.At least give him a chance. She said. You could tell she was trying to be stern, but she spoke gently.

Well, he and I are a bit too different for that. Hes caused me enough trouble, not to mention trying to kill my baby sister on countless occasions. He said, hate for the man in the corner coming out in his voice, but at the same time, love for his sister coming out as well.

Relena looked at him pleadingly. If you dont give him a chance, then at least leave him alone. Please Milliardo?

Milliardo looked at her, smiled kindly, and nodded slightly. Ill do my best, Relena. Its the least I can do for my sister, right? he said as he returned the hug she was giving him. Oh here. These are some files Une wanted you to look at. He took the folder from his arm and set it down on the desk. He then went to the door. Before he left, he turned and spoke to his golden haired sister. Well, I have work to do. And Relena, get some rest. You look exhausted. With that, he left the room, closing the door behind himself.

Relena got back to her paperwork, but she hadnt done five minutes worth when Heero stirred in his chair. He opened his prussian blue eyes and looked around. His eyes landed on Relena as she smiled at him. Good morning, Heero. You slept for a while. She said happily.

Heero gave her a look, but then got up and walked over to where she was working. He leaned over her shoulder slightly to look at the computer screen. She was just working on standard paperwork, and it looked like she had a lot to do. Heero went over and sat back down in his chair.

The night before still bugged him. There was no way that that was Quatre last night, so someone mustve had a recorder or something to make Heero think that it was Quatre. It was a ridiculous theory, but it was the only one he had. He absolutely refused to believe that Quatre would do anything that would hurt Relena in the least bit. He decided to investigate on the odd Gundams case.

Relena? he began.

Hmm?

Well, I was wondering, how long have the guys been acting oddly? he asked, referring once again to the other former Gundam pilots.

It started about four weeks ago. Sort of. About four weeks ago, Duo just up and disappeared. We dont know where he went or why he did, he just was gone. A week later, he came back. He said he had gotten an emergency phone call and had to leave immediately. Two days later, which was about three weeks ago, Wufei disappeared. The same thing. He was gone for a week, and then he turned up saying he had gotten a phone call. Then, two weeks ago, Trowa disappeared. Same thing. Finally, last week, Quatre was missing. After each of them reappeared was when they started acting tired and stuff. She answered, leaving her work and turning to her bodyguard.

And two weeks ago, when Trowa disappeared, was when he supposedly put the poison in my food and drink. But what happened to them in that week that would cause them to act oddly? he asked himself.

What did you say Heero? she asked, not understanding his muttering.

Nothing, but tell me. About the speech that you gave. It was during a party or something of the sort, am I correct? Relena nodded and he continued. Was everyone searched before entering?

Of course. People will always be thoroughly searched before entering a party with any amount of important people. She answered.

Let me guess. The only people found with guns were Trowa, Duo, Quatre, and Wufei?

Well, yes. They were not only attending because they were invited they were also to be sort of like guards for all of the people at the party. So of course they had guns. Powerful ones too. She answered matter of factly.

Heero spoke before she could say anymore. Were they using the guns given to them by the doctors? The doctors that had originally built the gundams had given each of the young pilots a unique and powerful gun. Each was different and they were far more powerful than any regular gun.

Yes. Why?

Have you or anyone else sent an investigation crew up to L3 to check the area that the assassination attempt occurred? he asked quickly.

Of course. Une and Sally sent up a crew about three days ago. They shouldve returned this morning. Why do you ask?

Colonel Lady Une and Major Sally Po were two people who worked with Relena. Lady Une was a former OZ employee. She had worked directly under Treize Cushrenada. She had long brown hair and light brown eyes to go along. Major Sally was a former military doctor. She had long light brown hair that was twisted over her shoulders, and light blue eyes.

I need to talk to them. Where are they? Heero asked, standing.

In the lab downstairs. Why are you going? Im coming too. She said, standing as well.

No, why dont you stay here and finish your work or get some rest. He answered heading for the door.

No way! I want to find out who has been trying to kill me as well. She cried, heading after him.

Heero turned and half smiled at his charge then ran out, Relena close in tow.

Heero entered the laboratory like room and found about ten people there. All of them were crowded around a large white table. Many articles lay spewn all over it. Heero pushed his way through the crowd to where Une and Sally were standing. When Heero and Relena arrived, they greeted them with grim smiles.

Miss Relena. Why are you down here? Sally asked, surprised to see her.

Well, Heero and I wanted to find out whats been going on. Relena answered looking at the things on the table. Heero seems to think that he can help solve all this."

Oh really? What makes him think that he can do better than what weve been doing? Sally asked, crossing her arms over her chest.

Dont start that with me Major. I know what Im doing and Im just trying to find out what has been going on with me and with Relena. It seems that this assassination attempt is more well thought out than we planned and whoever is after Relena has more reasons for trying to kill her than it appears. He answered, scanning the table for some type of solution.

What do you mean by that? Une wondered, curious as to why Hero seemed so determined to figure this out.

Heeros fingers found a bullet lying on the table, in the area of things recovered from the room that the shot was fired. Whats this? he asked, ignoring her question. He picked up the odd looking bullet.

This was the bullet that was fired at her that day. We found it in the wall about two feet where she had been standing. Une answered, not questioning but wondering why this intrigued the soldier so much.

Hmmm. Odd. He muttered, as he examined the bullet in his palm.

Whats odd Heero? Relena wondered, looking at the bullet as well.

Well, whoever was sent to kill you cant have been some lousy shot. Whoever did this, we believe, went in with the intention of killing you, right?

Well, yes. What about it?

Well, they wouldnt even attempt to assassinate you if they had poor aim because they would risk missing and getting caught without accomplishing their objective. Do you see where Im going with this? he asked, finally looking at Relena.

Not really. She answered. Une and Sally seemed to agree with Relena.

Well, if the person was a lousy shot, they wouldnt attempt an assassination until they got better. Because if they did attempt while they didnt have good aim, they would risk missing and getting caught and arrested without accomplishing their objective. See? he asked, doing his best to explain it to the confused women.

Oh I get it! But why are you telling us this? Sally wondered.

Well, in order for someone to miss their target by two feet, their aim has to be pretty lousy. So Im wondering if the persons objective was to assassinate you at all Relena. Or was it simply for another reason? Heero questioned.

Well, what else would be their motivation? Une wondered of him.

I have no idea, but its a theory and it seems likely. Maybe a closer inspection of the bullet will tell us something. With that said, Heero headed over to a table with microscopes all over it. He approached one and slipped the bullet under the lens. He put his eye to the eyepiece and looked over the bullet. What he saw confused and dumbfounded him. He pulled away, and looked at the three expectant women. He sighed a bit and then spoke. Well, I cant find anything offhand, but may I keep this bullet for a while so I can run some tests? I can probably find out exactly what kind of gun fired it.

Sally and Une looked at one another, then at Relena. Relena looked at them and nodded. Sally then turned to Heero. Yes you may keep it, but only for a few days. We would like to find out some information on it too.

Heero nodded and the two left for Relenas office once again.

Relena sat down at her desk and continued working at her computer. She glanced over at Heero who was still looking at the bullet that was nestled in his palm. She smiled and spoke. Heero. I know you better than that. I know you would have to find something out about that bullet. What is it about it that you dont want to tell us?

Heero sighed and met her aqua eyes. I found out what gun the bullet was fired from. He said slowly.

Really? Why didnt you tell us? she asked, turning her spinning chair toward him.

Youd flip if I told you. He answered matter of factly.

Try me. Relena crossed her arms over her chest and sat back in her chair.

Alright. Id know this kind of bullet anywhere. It it came from Duos gun. The one given to him by the doctor. Duo was the one who fired that shot at you.

Relena gaped at him. What are you talking about Heero? Why would Duo shoot at me?

I dont know. Why would Trowa try to poison me?

Relena still wouldnt believe that Duo would try to hurt her. Heero. Thats ridiculous. Why would Duo even think about doing that kind of thing? she asked, almost laughing.

I dont know. But if you think about it, maybe there was an ulterior motive. Maybe he fired for a different reason. Although I cant think of any reason at all, maybe he wasnt firing to kill you. Heero suggested.

Well, maybe someone stole his gun from his belt and tried to kill me and used a very discernible gun to do it, so that Duo would get blamed. She guessed, trying to think of anything besides that Duo is out to kill her.

Well, see now that would work, but there are two things wrong with that theory. One, Duo would notice or he wouldve said something to someone that someone stole his gun. Two, theres that aiming problem I mentioned downstairs. Clearly Duo shot the bullet, but the question is; why? Heero put his head in his hands as he thought.

Well, do you think their disappearances have something to do with it? Relena asked, hoping to help.

Probably, but theyre fighters. I dont see how anything couldve forced them to do this kind of thing. Someone could threaten their lives a thousand times over, and the guys wouldnt do anything against you. Heero answered, not budging from his position.

Well, why didnt you just tell us that that was Duos bullet from his special gun? Relena wondered.

I dont want anything to be done to Duo until we find out whats going on. I will talk to him tomorrow or the next time I see him, but I dont want him arrested because he obviously had a motive, but we need to find out what it is.

Silence fell over the office as Relena nodded and returned to her work. Heeros thoughts staryed to the four Gundam Pilots once more.
Things are looking more and more like Trowa, Wufei, Duo and Quatre have betrayed Relena.

Lunchtime passed and Relena had some free time for once (she had done work all morning), so she and Heero headed to her room. She liked the fact that she had Heero following her around 24/7. She felt as if nothing in the world could touch her. She was also always happy. Having Heero around her made her feel as if she were walking on air.

The two were going to try and get their minds off of everything that was happening.

Relena plopped down on her bed and Heero took the chair by a bay window that again, overlooked the lake in the courtyard. Relena oggled him. He really was hot. He was one of those guys that didnt try to look good, they were just hot by nature. She knew that if she expressed this openly, she would risk mortally wounding his social life.

She just wanted to walk up to him, sit in his lap and kiss him until this feeling went away. Of course if she did, she would probably get a bullet through the neck. That was just the type of person that Heero was. A ruthless assassin. Thats how he was raised. He and Relena were as different as light and dark. And Heero knew that better than anyone.

Relena was snapped back to reality as Heero spoke to her.

Were you born on earth? he asked.

Well yes. I was. Why do you ask?

Well, I wasnt I feel out of place. Not only outside the colonies, but when Im not in some Military base readying for some type of mission.

Relena saddened. She knew the hell he and the other four had been through. A wave of sympathy washed over her as she stared at his distracted eyes.

Well, no one can blame you. You went through so much to give us peace, then you were left with nothing. You should be given a heros reward. Because you are a hero. All of you really are.

Heero looked at her, confusion and gratefulness mixing in his prussian blue eyes. He wasnt sure weather to be happy or sad. He looked back at the lake.

A hero, huh? What gave you that idea?

Well, you gave the whole world and the colonies peace, didnt you?

No. I gave them war. I fought in a bloody war. I never gave anyone peace, and I dont think I ever will. Ive destroyed too many lives for that. My hands are too stained with the blood of countless innocent lives. Thats not peace. Thats chaos.

Heero Relena went silent for a moment. That was the way all the Gundam Pilots felt. They felt like more of a burden than a gift. A curse. You didnt bring the war, you participated in it because those were your orders which you obediently followed. You are a strong and loyal soldier. Never let anyone tell you otherwise. Including yourself.

Heero rolled his eyes. Im sorry I said anything.

Oh Im sorry if I said anything that offended you. Relena sat up and bowed her head.

Its not you. I was asking for it. He said, a tiny smile tugging at his lips. Relena mentally jumped for joy when she saw it.

Hey! We have a little while before dinner! Wanna go swimming like I suggested last night? she asked eagerly.

Heero blushed lightly. He was in no hurry to see Relena in a bathing suit. But to his dismay, he had little say in the matter.

Do I want to go swimming? No. But you can. I just have to follow you around all the time. I dont have to do what you do. He said looking at her.

Awwwww cmon! You need to loosen up! You need to have some fun! she said, throwing him a seductive glare.

Heero raised an eyebrow. Relena looked kind of funny when she looked like that. Not cool, or cute (well, maybe just a little bit), just funny.  He thought of a way out, but none came to mind.

Ill go, but I probably will not swim. He said, folding his arms across his chest.

Relena gave him a playful smile. Heero thought this one looked funny too. He sighed quietly as Relena entered her bathroom to change.

Heero had left his jacket inside and had changed to his black spandex shorts. He had also neglected to wear his shoes. He sat on the shore of the lake, watching Relena frolic and play in the water. She looked a lot different from the Vice Foreign Minister that he saw when she gave speeches. She looked like a normal eighteen-year-old. He had seen a lot of that side of her these past few days. She did front flips, back flips, handstands, and a lot more.

Heero may have been confused about his feelings for Relena, but he still liked to see her happy. He sat under the shade of the tree, the water of the lake licking slightly at his bare feet. He watched her for the whole time she was swimming, not too exciting, but whatever.

Heero had looked for Duo, but no one seemed to have seen him. Heero desperately needed to talk to him about the party. But no one seemed to know where he is. No one had seen him since last night. He wasnt anywhere to be found. Office, room, both were empty. Something was definitely wrong. He seemed to have disappeared, but he and Relena would look again tomorrow. All the attacks seemed so odd. The shot, the attacks the last few nights. None of them seemed to fit the fact that someone was out to kill Relena. Why would Duo fire a shot at Relena? Who were the attackers? Why did they not seem too interested in hurting Relena when they were attacking her room? So many questions, so few answers.

Relena was quite far out when she began screaming. Heero! Help! My leg cramped up! Help me!!

In an instant, Heero had thrown his green tank top off, and dove into the water, swimming for her at top speed. But when he reached her, she stopped screaming.

PSYCH!! she cried.

Heero gasped quietly as she put her hand on the top of his head and shoved him under. When she released him, he came up out of the water and groaned a bit. He then shoved her underwater briefly and began swimming back to shore. As he reached the shore, she called to him.

You know, the funny thing is; I can do that as many times as I want to, and you have to come and save me! she held up two fingers on each hand and curled them a few times.

Heero rolled his eyes and replaced his shirt.

Heero sat in his chair by the window as Relena slept silently in her bed. She had had some trouble getting to sleep, but eventually, she had drifted off. She had then woken up two times with a nightmare. Each time, she had insisted that she was fine. He was kind of worried about her. She had been through a lot the past few nights and she was trying to hide it by having fun and acting like nothing was wrong. Heero knew better, however. He was the only one. During the day, she was fine. she was more timid and scared during the night as most people would be.

Relena began to twist and writhe in her bed and Heero stood up. He didnt know what was wrong, but he hated to see her in any pain. He dashed over to her bed and watched her as she groaned. Tears welled in the sides of her eyes, and Heero longed to help her, but stood by for fear that waking her up in an intense dream could hurt her more. He sat down on the side of her bed and put his strong hands on her shoulders.

She continued to writhe around and soon began to yell quietly. Heero slowly shook her as he whispered to her. He was no good at comforting words or anything, but he figured he would do his best. Suddenly, her eyes snapped open, she sat up and wrapped her arms around her torso, shaking like a leaf. Heero could see tears falling from beneath her golden bangs. Heero put a hand on her shoulder.

Relena? Are you alright? he asked as soothingly as he knew how. He was almost sure it didnt sound too consoling.

Relena said nothing, but fell into Heeros chest, wrapping her arms around him and crying softly. Heero was kind of surprised at her reaction, but he wrapped his strong arms around her as well, trying his best to comfort her. As soon as he pulled her close to him, she settled down. He savored the feeling of holding her, feeling her pressed against him, knowing that he could comfort her.

Relena felt Heero return her embrace. As soon as his arms had tightened around her, she no longer felt afraid. His strong, powerful arms gave her a feeling that nothing on earth could hurt her. However, the nightmare hadnt been one where she was hurt, it had been Heero who was killed. She could hardly cope with the thought of him dead. She loved the fact that she was this close to him. She knew she was the first person that Heero had remotely opened up to, and she felt special.

Heero continued to hold her and stroke her golden hair until he felt her relax against him and he knew she had fallen asleep. Her arms went limp around his chest, and he slowly put her back in bed. He covered her up with the blankets and returned to his chair. He looked over at her as she slept. The electricity that came from being close to her seemed to still be surging through his body. He shook it off and forced himself to look back at the lake. Tonight, there was no shadow standing on the balcony. Although, Heero could not shake the feeling that the rest of the night would not go smoothly.

He snapped his head to the side as something creaked in the room. He sighed as he guessed it was just Relena rolling over in her bed.
Im getting paraniod. Jeeze.

He settled down into his chair. No sooner had that been done, that Heeros eyes flew open, as he could feel someone sneaking up behind him. Slowly, so that someone from behind couldnt tell that his arm was moving, he pulled the dagger from his belt. He jumped from his seat, to face yet another shadow. Dont you bakas get tired of getting your butts kicked? he cried, brandishing the knife dangerously.

Were not afraid of you, Heero Yuy. Again, Heero noticed that the voice was faintly familiar, but it wasnt coming from the persons face.

The shadow moved into the light and Heeros eyes widened. "D-D-Duo?!?!" He couldnt see the intruders face except for the two dark blue eyes staring out at him, but the persons thigh length dark hair gave him away.

The shadow launched at Heero, tackling him and thrusting a knife at his face. Heero caught the mans hand and tried his best to keep it from slashing him. D-Duo! What are you doing?! Why are you trying to kill me?! Heero yelled.

I think youre mistaken. Im not Duo. He said calmly.

Then who are you? Who do you work for?! He shouted at the mans blank eyes.

I have no reason to tell you. He answered, putting more force on the knife, almost putting all of his weight on the weapon.

Heero put his hand on the shadows wrist and twisted with all his might, almost breaking the knife out of his hand. The intruder dropped the knife and jumped away, holding his injured wrist.

Heero took the chance and picked up the knife and attacked, catching the persons leg, cutting a nice sized cut in the top if his thigh. The shadow screamed in pain and gripped his leg . He shot a death glare to Heero before retreating out the window.

Heero looked after him. For once, Relena hadnt been awakened. She was probably too tired to wake up at all. He thought about the way the intruder had looked. Why had he looked so much like Duo? Why was everything turning out to look like the Gundam pilots had turned traitor? Heero wasnt sure, but he was starting to worry about what was going to happen in the next couple of nights.
Wufei: *Clutching Kitty~chan, trying to pull her off of Heero's face* Oh, you're done already? hehehe
