Wrongfully jailed woman to be paid
THAILAND - Where else?
National police chief Sant Sarutanont says he will take responsibility for the wrongful arrest and conviction of a woman who spent a year behind bars for a robbery she did not commit.
Pol Gen Sant said he would pay Thongkham Khornkhongb compensation from his own pocket if necessary.
Mrs Thongkham, 47, of tambon Kaboktia in Chai Nat's Noen Kham district, was arrested on a warrant issued by Lat Lum Kaew police in Pathum Thani and charged with robbery. She served more than a year in jail. The wrongful arrest was exposed after another woman with the same first and family name as Mrs Thongkham was arrested. The second woman was the real culprit.
Pol Gen Sant said police should have been more careful. He has asked a police inspector-general to investigate.
Crime Suppression Division police who made the wrongful arrest and local police at Lat Lum Kaew would be questioned. |
