Operation Piranha

September 7, 1965. One of the more interesting reasons for taking the FO team off of the OP on Hill 213 was to let us get a little exercise. This photo was taken just prior to the start of one of those workouts, in this case known as Operation Piranha. The photo, again, does not do justice to the reality. I had never before seen as many helicopters at one time. I was unable to get them all into the photo, but on the frame around the slide I made the notation "40 UH-34s."
It was first light, and very shortly after I took this picture, we loaded them all and flew off toward the LZ on the Batangan Peninsula.
