We lived in the sticks, in what had all the appearances of a haunted house. This is actually a color photo - there weren't a lot of colors back then. The photo was taken from the back porch. The finish on those walls is just what it looks like -- worn whitewash. I was in high school at the time (St. Joseph Preparatory, in Bardstown, Kentucky -- an all-boys school), and I had developed an interest in physics and chemistry. My mother took this photo of me working on a model airplane; I think it was a Cessna 172. A friend of mine, Don Parrish, gave the kit to me. We could not have afforded something as expensive as this. Don had inherited it from some old guy who also had this expensive sports-type car - I think it was called a Studebaker Hawke. (Somebody out there probably remembers the thing - let me know, will you?)
When this photo was taken in the mid '50s, my father had started to build our new, modern house out in the front of this one. He and I (and sometimes my older brother) did all the construction. My father was frugal and he bought only the supplies that he could afford to pay for in hard cash. I took a long time and a lot of work to build the new house.
