| Ph Freshwater > The Ph Value of water is a measurement of the Hydrogen ion Concentration, The results of a Ph test can determine if the sample is Acid or Alkaline 0 being ACID, 14 being ALKALINE but for keeping fish the reading should be between 5.5 to 8.1, depending on the fish ie. (Refer to fishes page) Changing Ph. > Many factors can cause Ph to change in aquarium, Organic matter or fish wastes or excess food breaking down under biological filteration has an acidifying effect causing the water Ph to read as acid, The influence of calcium, and magnesium in the form of shells, coral or other calcite materials make the water go to the alkaline side. Ammonia. Ammonia is very toxic to aquarium life, even in small quantities as low as 0.5 ppm yet is a very common substance. It is produced each time organic material is left to rot in the water (fish waste, dead fish, excess food, ) Ammonia control > Packets of Bacteria in a dried form will give some relief, Commercial cemicals can also be used with some success, some come in ammonia Blocks. The best way to keep your aquarium water in good condition is small water changes often. |
