Medication Details
White Spot> is a common parasite found in most waters, So remember the medication kills while the parasite is free swimming so has to be done 2 or 3 times to get all the parasites, White Spot is the one disease that nearly all aquarists have heard of, and as such, it is quite often misdiagnosed, so that any white blemish is wrongly called white spot. White spot can be identified by checking that all the spots are pure white and round in shape with no lumps or bumps at the edges, if of white and wooly the disease is usually a fungal disease Be prepared for the fish to get worse before getting better This occurs because the medication cannot reach the parasite buried in the fish, The parasite must mature and leave the fish before the medication can kill it off.
External Signs of most Disease > (1) Fish behaving abnormally, Keeping to top or bottom of tank, Erratic swimming Scratching on strata, Shimmying, poor equilibrium. (2) Clamped Fins, drooping tail and fins. (3) Rapid Breathing , loss of appetite (4) Abnormal colour, cloudy eyes, darkening, loss of colour, (5) Skin abnormalities Cotton like tufts, leisions, white spots, excessive mucus, greying patches, haemorrhages (6) Swelling or Bloating. (7) Emaciation. Thinning of all body parts. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The imune system of the fishes is able to cope with many bacteria which are found on the surface and within the fish. Stress upsets this balance in favour of the bacteria. The body slime and skin are the primary defence barrier, The slime prevents invasion by continuious renewal of its-self, The skin is equiped with enzimes. antibodies, and defence cells known as macrophages which digest and destroy bacteria, So the importance of no damage to the skin physically, chemically or by Parasite.keeps a fish in good health,
Velvet Disease (Oodinium Linneticum) Looks a bit like white spot, but the spots are smaller and are brownish yellow, They will quickly cover the whole fish and if vewied from the front it looks like it has been dusted with pepper. All the fins become ragged and the fish will rub themselves on any surface. If untreated the fins are eaten away, vitality is lost, the gills are infected and become swollen, the fish now gives up and dies a slow death. The disease spreads very quickley through the aquarium. The remedy is simple add 1 ounce sea salt to each gallon of water. Or use a good commercial paracite remedy , and the fish should be cleared in 2 to 3 days
Fungus > The spores of fungus are in most waters, but the natural mucus covering on a fish will protect it from this Saprolegnia Fungus. Any damage to the fishes fins or body mucus will permit the spores to reach the flesh of the fish, Fungus will develope and spread, The first signs are a few white hairs prutruding from the injured spot, they quickly spread orer the rest of the fish. The fish swim with a good deal of difficulty and show a cotton wool like growth (Fungus), Only the affected fish will need to be medicated, The wound should be wiped with a very soft cloth or fine paint brush that has been dipped in a commersial fungul cure, The fish can now be placed in another container and treated with the same fungal cure in the water as per instructions. The injured fish is now protected from attack from other tank mates. If the fungus is attacking more than one fish it means that the fishes in the tank are loosing the body mucus makeing them prone to fungus attack, A chill, or wrong Ph level can cause this stress to happen and make the fish open to the fungus spores. Check that all water conditions are correct and dose whole tank with fungul cure , Always use medications as per manufacturers instructions.
Fish Lice :- Free swimming, translucent, wafer-like paracite that become attached moctly to goldfish from July to October They are about 3mm across and will attack tropical fishes all year round, Treat with a good paracite remedy and again after a weeks interval so as to kill any newly hatched eggs.
