Staying Away
by Kenovay
Jack never thought Will could do it. Stay away from the sea. From the tall ships and the stars that guided them, and the freedom. The freedom that you could taste, that sat on your tongue like salt and limes and alcohol. Jack never put himself to much effort to understand other people, only watched them try to understand him, and so he couldn't understand how anybody could resist the sea.

But there Will was. Inland, a few hours ride from the harbour, where you couldn't smell the salt or hear the swell. Happy, blissfully so, with his stormy wife, and his beautiful child. Jack stayed for a while, until the freshness of the air got to be too much for him, and then he crept away in the night, the intruder who should never really have been there.

It was only after he had a deck under his feet again that he realised that maybe what Will was staying away from was him.
