Defeat for the home team would confine Souths to the wooden spoon in their first season back in the premiership. And only an act of Houdini proportions could save them of the dubious award. The Rabbitohs have conceded 166 points in their last three matches. The Panthers aren't faring much better, but have had pointscoring five-eighth Ryan Girdler (knee) cleared to play.

Manly officials will watch Saturday night's attendance figure at NorthPower with interest. The Eagles attracted some of the season's smallest crowds before quitting Gosford after local residents were encouraged to boycott games in a stand for a "local" team.

THE Rabbitohs have conceded more than 160 points in their last three games, and obviously must fix up their defence. Their attack in this game looked fine when they could get their hands on the ball, but their defence through the centre and on their right side was nothing short of woeful. The Dragons were totally aware of that and continued to attack those areas. Mark Riddell was great from dummy half and he linked well with the likes of Mark Gasnier and Lee Hookey, who caused plenty of problems for South Sydney. The Dragons face a nervous wait with skipper Trent Barrett on report for a head slam, which he has been suspended for once before this season, but they do have a bye next week, which will give them two points to remain in the race for the top eight and allow players to overcome any niggling injuries.

South Sydney captain Andrew Hart is in doubt for Sunday's WIN Stadium clash with St George Illawarra due to a twisted ankle.
"We train on Saturday in Wollongong and we'll make a decision then," said coach Craig Coleman.

The Rabbitohs will wear black arm-bands against St George Illawarra on Sunday in honour of life member Eric "Fred" West who passed away on Monday. West was a member of the football staff for over 30 years including the glory days of the 1960s and 70s.

The Rabbitohs started positively enough, matching the Eels in all areas in the opening stages.
But the floodgates soon opened, Luke Burt crossing for Parramatta in the 15th minute.
Hodgson added the extras to give the Eels a 6-0 lead.
The Eels were over again just minutes later when Jason Moodie weaved through some poor defence.
Hodgson again kicked the conversion, and the Eels moved out to a 12-0 lead.
The Rabbitohs struggled to regain their composure and the Eels scored in the 26th minute.
A beautiful inside ball from five-eighth Ben Kusto saw Michael Buettner cross the line without a hand being placed on him.
Hodgson was successful with the kick and the Eels snatched a 18-0 lead.
To add insult to injury, Hodgson - on the end of a lovely ball from Nathan Hindmarsh - scored on the stroke of half-time to take the lead out to 22-0.
Hodgson was in again just minutes into the second half, and from there Parramatta never looked back.
The Eels put on five more tries to run out convincing winners.

Eels prop Michael Vella (knee) remains in doubt for tonight's clash with the unchanged Rabbitohs. Daniel Heckenberg is his likely replacement in coach Brian Smith's starting side. Parramatta are hoping to break a run of losses at home that has now stretched to five matches. South Sydney seem to be the team to help them break that duck; they've conceded 120 points in their past three matches.

If Parramatta can't win this match, then it doesn't deserve to be in the top eight. Luckily for coach Brian Smith the Eels have a good run into the finals but they can't afford to be off the boil again when they play teams below them on the ladder. The Rabbitohs firmed as favourites for the wooden spoon when they were thrashed 50-4 by Wests Tigers last week and Parramatta should have no problems in posting their first victory since round 13. With the return of Luke Burt (knee), David Vaealiki (knee) and Jason Moodie (suspension), the Eels will have no excuses for getting their finals campaign back on track. Souths' only motivation is pride and avoiding the wooden spoon but the controversy surrounding the axing of skipper Adam Muir from the team won't help. Coach Craig Coleman has brought in several new faces and wielded the axe on others, including former Test centre Russell Richardson. Key: Souths simply must tighten their defence, particularly on the left-hand side of the field. If not then their opponents will rack up another 50 points.

Having successfully approached former international Mark Carroll via the Internet in 1999 about returning from London, the Rabbitohs earlier this year text-messaged Parramatta coach Brian Smith to ask about the services of Eels halfback Ben Kusto for the remainder of the season.

Rabbitohs captain Adam Muir was dropped from first grade yesterday, and officials admit he may have played his last game. Muir, who announced last week he would be retiring at the end of the season, was not named in any grade for Saturday night's matches against Parramatta. "He's just been rested for the week," South Sydney chief executive Paul Dunn said. "He announced his retirement and said he was mentally fatigued - I think he played that way the other day. We'll give him a week off to think about it." Asked whether Muir's 11-year premiership career might be over, Dunn said: "It's more likely he'll be back in two weeks but, given that there's only four weeks to go, there's always that possibility, I suppose." Coach Craig Coleman has made a host of changes, including dropping centres Russell Richardson and Andrew King and "rotating" winger Joven Clarke, in reaction to Sunday's 50-4 loss to Wests Tigers. The new caps are winger John Olzard and reserve Gerald Symonds.

SOUTHS had a bit of emotion on their side here, playing exactly one year after they were re-admitted to the competition. But Penrith looked to have the game won on a couple of occasions, and Owen Craigie, the hero in the end, turned over some possession in the first half. He was brilliant in the second half, though, and got the Rabbitohs out of reach with that field goal. The Panthers were their own worst enemy, dropping ball at crucial times, not least Rhys Wesser and Luke Rooney. Craigie got one of his tries from one such mistake. All of a sudden, a game Penrith had in its control got away. Some of Souths signings this week have been mighty impressive, and from Ashley Harrison to Bryan Fletcher, and everyone in between, they look to have a terrific balance for next season. It could be interesting to watch them develop over the next 12 months.
