Brad Watts takes the South Sydney halfback duties for Sunday's match against Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval. He replaces the suspended Nathan DeBartolo. Noah Sete drops off the five-man bench, while Frank Puletua, not listed in the program, returns from a thigh injury as an interchange.
(SMH - 12 July 2002) These unlikely sides will create their own piece of history this weekend no matter the outcome of the game. It seems hard to believe, but Wests Tigers and South Sydney have never met in the premiership. The black and orange team came through the merger of Balmain and Western Suburbs in 2000, while the Rabbitohs were evicted from the NRL at the end of the previous season. That means the two strugglers will clash for the first time on Sunday. The Tigers go into the match as favourites, with the club boasting two wins from three games at Leichhardt Oval this season. But the Rabbitohs are in solid form after an Owen Craigie-inspired win over Penrith last weekend. Craigie's partner in the halves is yet to be determined by coach Craig Coleman, with Nathan DeBartolo suspended. Brett Sheehan, Brad Watts and Michael Moran are all in the running to wear the No.7 jersey.>

SOUTHS had a bit of emotion on their side here, playing exactly one year after they were re-admitted to the competition. But Penrith looked to have the game won on a couple of occasions, and Owen Craigie, the hero in the end, turned over some possession in the first half. He was brilliant in the second half, though, and got the Rabbitohs out of reach with that field goal. The Panthers were their own worst enemy, dropping ball at crucial times, not least Rhys Wesser and Luke Rooney. Craigie got one of his tries from one such mistake. All of a sudden, a game Penrith had in its control got away. Some of Souths signings this week have been mighty impressive, and from Ashley Harrison to Bryan Fletcher, and everyone in between, they look to have a terrific balance for next season. It could be interesting to watch them develop over the next 12 months.

The Sydney Roosters are firming as the future home of Brisbane centre Chris Walker.
Souths had been chasing Walker but he is ready to accept a lesser deal from the Roosters.The Rabbitohs' recruiting drive continues to move ahead, however, with the club announcing on Saturday Brisbane lock Ashley Harrison, St George Illawarra's Justin Smith and Sydney Roosters' Mark Minichiello had all signed.

South Sydney coach Craig Coleman has announced Joven Clarke and Paul McNicholas will be the players to be omitted from his nominated six-man bench for the game against the Panthers at Penrith Stadium tomorrow night.
The Rabbitohs last played Penrith - who yesterday resigned forward Joel Clinton - away in 1999, winning 20-0.
(SMH - 5 July 2002) South Sydney utility player Shane RIGON will make his 100th first grade appearance when the Rabbitohs travel to Penrith this Saturday night. The 25-year-old Canterbury junior made his first grade debut with the Sydney Roosters in 1996.
He was a member of the Roosters� grand final squad in 2000 before spending a season with Bradford in the British Super League in 2001. He linked up with the Rabbitohs this season and has appeared in all 15 top grade games for the club since their readmission to the NRL.

South Sydney will hold a press conference today to announce the signing of several players.
Sources indicated the club was close to signing Brisbane brothers Chris and Shane Walker.
Rabbitoh officials would not confirm this last night, however.
Souths president George Piggins reiterated yesterday his club would not be outlaying big money for players.
"I have asked to be told how our budget stands for the next few years," Piggins said.
"We don't want to go over the salary cap or blow the budget. I want to know who is affordable before we do anything."
