It is said that if you use your life , which is finite , to pursue knowledge , which is infinite, you place yourself in jeopardy. If one accepts that history , up to the point of the renaissance represents thesis , and that the last 500 years of 'science' represents antithesis , then a serious dose of of synthesis is well overdue.
Let us put humanity in context as a relatively important component of nature , but NOT indispensable. If humanity ceased to exist nature would continue to function and in a few thousand years visible traces of mankind and its works would be on a par with the traces of dinosaurs.
Science at the prompting of wealth and power [both of which corrupt] , looks only at physical reality. Its work is dedicated to the creation of ever more material wealth and power.
At the time of the renaissance Alchemy was the early striving of science to break free of the shackles of spirituality as represented by organized religion - whose rulers were , rightly , fearful of losing their dominance and power. Alchemy was the hybrid transition from attempts to to turn the leaden material into physical gold, to enrich the princes of the church , giving rise to chemistry.
Science can now turn lead into gold but at a cost that far outweighs the value of the gold produced. Which illustrates the diminishing returns offered by pure science , while displaying the same fear of losing wealth and power that caused religious potentates to to fight the infant science tooth and nail in the middle ages. Medical science for some reason, is more reactionary than any other area of science. But all fear the loss of power and wealth - refusing to learn the lesson of the past.
Psychology now fills the role of Alchemy. It has a foot in both camps by allocating the 'Mind' to the physical area occupied by the brain. This totally blinkered notion allows physicians [ who deal only with the physical ] to describe some phenomena they cannot comprehend as "all in the mind", therefore unreal and dismiss it. T.C. Lethbridge [12] maintained that many consider the brain merely a mechanism for censoring sensation. An idea that is gaining ground at the expense of those who think the mind and brain are coincidental.
The mind actually occupies a volume larger than the body . Dr. Grey Walter showed that a TV set could be operated on an intentional basis by amplified brainwaves. This is confirmed by Krilian photography , which revealed flares of energy around the fingertips . It follows that a statement that "illness is all in the mind" is an evasion of responsibility , telling us nothing.
The power of the Psyche is unchallengeable and as yet unexplained - it cannot be underestimated. To save herr child a mother will sometimes perform feats of superhuman strength , way outside the power of a 'normal' human being. Telekinetic powers , sometimes shown by girls at puberty are a well documented under the heading 'Poltergeist Phenomena ' . People who believe they are Christ will often spontaneously produce "stigmata" . Though this is usually in the palm of the hand rather than above the wrist -it depends on the belief !.
One should never underestimate the power of the psyche to reach through
the subconscious and "borrow" the power of the Collective Unconscious[14]
. It is the source of charisma, archetypes, avatars and the like - producing
Buddha, Hitler , Marilyn Monroe , Mother Teresa etc., This is another bit
of the jigsaw for our synthesis.
