| xKennebec Maine Coon Cattery is located in Western Pennsylvania, North of Pittsburgh. The Maine Coon is America's purebred long-haired cat with a long history in New England. The Maine Coon was America's first show cat, then fell into obscurity and experienced a resurgence in the eary 1970's. We started raising and showing Maine Coon cats in 1976, when the breed was just getting started again as an "official" purebred cat. When our children came along, we took a break to raise them and started with the cats again in 1996. Kennebec is the name of a river in Maine, the home state of the Maine Coon cat. The Kennebec River was named by the Abnakis Indians. The name translates to "long quiet waters" and probably referred to the stretch of water below Augusta which is "without falls". The Maine Coon breed has come a long way from its beginnings and we're proud to be working with these wonderful cats.
