POST RACE INTERVIEW
Jesse Black (North American Racing,Thomas Superwheels):
"Once the servers finally got squared away, I got to do my first
laps in an
F3 at spa. I took the trusty North American Racing/TSW Cooper
out and ran a
couple of 4:17.4s which put me 4th on the grid. At the start,
I crepted off
the line, hoping not to get into any trouble (especially since
it was my
first race with the league). I saw my team mate zing by on
the right (he
started about 9th) and followed him through Eau Rouge. I
did some drafting
practice on his bumper until the masta straight and then pulled
by and away
from him. I stayed in 3rd place for a good amount of time
and began
entertaining myself by acting like I was actually catching the
2nd place
brabham (what wishful thinking) and by testing the limits through
malmedy
(what a rush coming down the hill with full opposite lock and the
pedal to
the metal). Finally, coming through the final complex of
turns, the leading
eagle spun. I moved into 2nd place and gained a little on
the brabham (he
backed out a bit when the eagle spun). I was reeling the
brabham in on the
exits of the turns, but never close enough to catch a draft and
he always
pulled back away on the long straights. Finally, he made
a mistake in
malmedy and I got ahead of him by 5 seconds. For the rest
of the race, it
was just a waiting game to see if he could catch me. He was
1-2 seconds
faster than me per lap (his best lap was a 4:15 compared to my
4:16) and all
I could do was watch my mirrors to see his car gradually catching
me. For
the last 3 laps, he overcooked la source heavily and used the haybails
to
turn his car (one time catching up a good deal of time), but he
luckily
never found a way to collect me in his attempts to catch up.
I ended up
grabbing the win with a second or 2 margin. I think the biggest
contribution to my win is consistency. I stayed nice and
smooth the whole
time and never made a mistake. I have also found that I am
really good at
keeping the cars momentum up, which can really help out in these
F3
cars...especially at spa."
