“They call me the Fireman”

Today’s guest is no stranger to Carpin’ aboard the ALVA D. The above picture was made back on April 26th when the Ol’ Captain and Dennis “They call me the Fireman” Brown boated 17 of Dog River’s finest. Dennis quickly got on the scoreboard that early spring day but since then the competition has really heated up. I made note of Dennis’s cap during that story and I feel that it bears reemphasizing. Some of our newer readers may not know Dennis and they need to see him for who he really is. If you will look closely you will recognize a very familiar Disney logo on the port side of Mr. Brown’s cap. Rest assured that when it comes to Carp fishing, there is nothing Goofy or Mickey Mouse about this man’s attitude and determination. Carpin’ aboard the ALVA D can change a man. It can often lead to a Jekyll/Hyde experience. Some of our nation’s greatest minds and scientists have come to describe it as the “Dog River Carpnomenon”. Many fine men have been completely transfigured after a “pull down” from a Dog River Golden Ghost! I’m telling you folks, this Carp thang is contagious!!

Dennis joined the Atlanta Fire Dept shortly after the invention of the wheel and the inclined plane. He was there before the Dalmatians even had their spots. When his career first started the arsonists in town were still using flint and steel. He has responded to the alarms. He has known the thrill of victory and the very sad agony of defeat. Dennis knows his hooks and ladders. He can detect the distinct odor of fire from blocks away but could he smell victory in our contest today? Was Dennis red hot or was he just blowing smoke? Did he burst aflame with success this fine fall morning? There are many firemen but there can be only one fire chief. Did Dennis get back on the board? I thought you’d never ask…..

Our Story

The DRCFA was well represented today. Along with the ALVA D there were two other DRCFA boats Carpin’. We even had two newcomers to our group. The Wolf pack was out in force as usual. Joining Captain “Snap Daddy” Wolf and “Bent Pole” Brent on the WILLIAM G was our first rookie. Travis “I got Rhythm” Rhoads made his Dog River debut today. Travis is currently serving our great nation in the U.S. Army and he is the type that makes the DRCFA proud. We are honored to have him and his beautiful wife and children as part of our family at CLBC. Captain Keith Jacobs was joined today in a rental unit by newcomer Eugene Obermeyer. It was great to see Keith out there out there again and to have an opportunity to meet Eugene.

I’ve done the roll call, now what about the fish? Two Carp and one turtle were caught by 7 men in three boats. Nuff said. I am attaching three pictures. One of the “Pack”, one of Keith and Eugene, and finally one of the Ol’ Captain with his turtle of the week. By the way, did you know that if you grab a Snapping Turtle by the tail he will say “cheese”?

Life Lesson

We have at least four distinguished firemen or former firemen in the DRCFA. They are Dennis, Gene Sparks, Lon “Butterbean” Wynn and Chuck “Snap Daddy” Wolf. In the two years since 9/11/01 I have come to appreciate these guys more than ever. The Bible says that no greater love has any man than to lay down his life for a friend. I am convinced that these four and many more just like them would walk into a fire and readily lay their lives down for others if the need arose. I thank God for them. They are all heroes in my book.

Until Next Time. Keep on Carpin'

News Flash!

It had to happen sooner or later. It was only a matter of time. They may not let girls play golf in that little tournament over in Augusta. They will never (at least for now) wear that ugly coat. But (change of direction) that don’t mean chicks can’t catch Carp in Dog River! Today, August 26th 2003 the DRCFA was changed forever! That’s right, folks! Terri “The Liberator” Higginbotham made her Dog River debut aboard the WILLIAM G. She made her maiden voyage in style by boating a 5 lb Golden Ghost while fishing with her husband, Ken “I use to be on the board” Higginbotham.

Some of you narrow minded men may be saying, “Women in the DRCFA? Unthinkable.” Please remember that the DRCFA by-laws simply say “that you shouldn’t go down the river with another fella’s wife.” What you and your own wife do is your own business!

Since this News Flash was from Staff reports there was no picture available at press time. If you happen to see Terri at church Sunday please congratulate her. By the way, she will not be wearing a green jacket.

Until next time, Keep on Carpin’,

Captain Horace
