Tradition
One of my all time favorite movies is The Fiddler on
the Roof. I have seen it on TV many times. Ive seen it at the fabulous Fox
theatre in Atlanta. Each time I see it I am made aware of the importance of family and
tradition. When I even hear the word Tradition I burst forth in song. The
voice and quality is not like that of Tevyes but the enthusiasm is still the same.
There are many Labor Day traditions. Many of you will
cook-out today and have picnics. You will spend time with family, friends, and/or
co-workers. It is a wonderful holiday. It is truly an all-American holiday:
Labor Day, the first Monday in
September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic
achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the
contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our
country.
U.S Dept of Labor
Some are you are NASCAR fans. You are well aware of Terry
Labontes victory yesterday at Darlington. You know the history of the Southern 500
and its Labor Day tradition. Labonte has chased the Winston Cup for years but until
yesterday had not been in victory lane in his last 156 starts.
We all pursue different things. My Labor Day guest today was
not pursuing the Winston Cup, the Stanley Cup or even a Dixie cup. Richard Maples joined
me today in hot pursuit of the DRCFAs 2003 Carp King Trophy! Talk about tradition!
Move over NASCAR! Forget it Tevye! There are traditions and then there are traditions! Did
Richard get on the board? Did we load the boat with Golden Ghosts? What were the results?
I thought youd never ask!
Our Story
I first met Richard 24 years ago when he was a sixth grader
at Fairplay Middle School. I was in my sixth year of teaching Physical Education in the
Douglas County School System. Our paths have crossed several times since then. During that
time he has married and become a father. I have stayed married and become a grandfather.
Its cool when a former student can become a friend. What is even more special is
when you become brothers in Christ. We had a great time today reminiscing, sharing and
just talking about things in general and nothing in particular. Boat talk is a special
thing. You do it in the boat and you leave it in the boat.
But (change of direction) what about the fish? We planned to
leave at 1:00 PM. We fished and talked all morning and finally caught one Ghost each right
before quittin time. Richard had the fish of the day with his 2 pounder. I am
attaching two pictures of Richard Carpin beats Workin Maples.
Another Tradition
The Wolf Pack was on Dog River again today. Snap Daddy
Chuck and Bent Pole Brent were out there once again chasing the Ghosts.
When young Brent is 50 years old it wouldnt surprise me one bit to see him in a boat
called the C WOLF out on the Mighty Dog. Now that is tradition!
I hope you all have a great holiday today. Thanks so much for
you kind words of encouragement. As of today, 28 different guys have boarded the ALVA D
with me this year in pursuit of a morning of fun and relaxation. We have had a lot of fun
and I have been blessed by each one of you. We have less than three months to go
until the Thanksgiving cut off date. Dont give up the ship! Until then
Until next time, Keep on Carpin'
