Like a Rock

We seem to live in a time where values like integrity, character, and dignity are out of vogue. There was a time when a man’s word was his bond. His yes meant yes and his no meant no. There was no need for a Notary’s signature because a deal was secured with a handshake. A man would once actually give eight hours work for his eight hours pay. His name and reputation were important to him. He had the silly notion that his workplace needed him to be there every day and do his best. These positive traits now seem to have become the exception rather than the rule. Maltbie D. Babcock once said “the real values of life are internal, not external; and what counts with God—and sooner or later with men---is, not what a man has, but what he is.” Where has our individual character and integrity gone? Can I get a witness here? Is there any hope for our future? YOU BET YOUR SWEET TIME CLOCK THERE IS!

My guest today was Mr. Jason Allrid. I figure Jason to be 22-23 yrs of age. Folks, I’ve got gym socks older than this guy! Jason is a college senior and works part time at the Georgia Dealers Auto Auction. I am here to tell you that this young man’s character is intact! Over the last couple of summers I have witnessed Jason earn the respect and admiration of many men at the auction who are 40-50 years his senior. Our world today still recognizes the Bible based traits that I’ve mentioned even if they don’t want to possess them. I was very proud and honored to have this young man as my guest today aboard the ALVA D!

But (change of direction) I was somewhat concerned about the temptations that Jason might face on board this hazy foggy morning. How would he respond to this refiner’s fire? Do “pull downs” affect politeness? Is there any correlation between Character and Carp? Does absolute truth have any real place on a fishing trip? I once heard that “a fisherman’s guess is better than anybody’s scales.” How would Jason describe the inevitable “Big one that got away”? Jason has a background in computers. He is very user friendly when it comes to the internet and the cyber world. He is aware of the degrading temptations and perversions that exist there but could Jason resist the Soft Corn of the ALVA D? How would Jason fare away from all spam filters and parental control devices? Would Jason bend like a Willow or be strong as an Oak? Would my boy stand firm like Gibraltar or would he just sink like a rock? I thought you’d never ask……….

Our Story

Everyone has their own niche in the DRCFA. It only took me a little while to locate Jason “The Turtle Master” Allrid’s place. Not long after anchoring, Jason hooked into a double. He had a Snapping Turtle on two of his three poles! After losing the first one he proudly boated a 17 lb snapping, stinking, corn swallowing reptile from the past! This thing was second only to Chuck “Snap Daddy” Wolf’s 18 lb plus creature caught earlier this year. We were unable to get pictures of this baby due to low batteries in my digital camera.

After a phone call on my handy cell phone, my friend Sid met us at the dock with some fresh batteries. We were soon loaded and on our way once again. By two o’clock we had boated four Carp, one Channel Cat, and one mean and nasty creature from the Dog River Lagoon.

I am attaching a couple of pictures. I am including Jason’s catch of the day- a 3lb, 2 oz Golden Ghost. It was a joy to spend time this morning with this fine young man. I hope it will not be our last trip!
