Its Crew Cut Time!
Because my birthday is in December, I started the 1st grade
as a 5 yr old in the fall of 1958. I have loved school ever since that first day.I loved
the first day of school as well as the last. June was always a special time on Phoenix
Avenue. We knew that when school was out we would get that summer crew cut and toss our
shoes into a corner (until Sunday rolled around) and be barefoot and free as a bird until
the school bell rang again in September.Usually, toward the end of July I felt a strong
urge to get my crayons, scissors, pencils and my new cigar box ready for the next school
year.
For 45 consecutive years I have had these feelings. 12 years
of public school. 4 years of college. 29 consecutive years as a teacher. For 45 straight
years I have longed for school to begin in the fall and looked forward to Crew Cut Time in
June. Yesterday was a bitter/sweet day. When the final kid loaded the bus I knew that my
school days were over. I am a very blessed man. I have enjoyed my job and have received a
paycheck every month since I was 21 yrs old. Because of the grace of God and the Georgia
Teacher Retirement System I will continue to get a check each month until I go to meet my
Maker.
I cut my hair myself these days. There isnt as much
hair to cut this June but the feelings are still the same. I will be seeking employment of
some kind in August. I dont want to be CEO or anyones boss. I simply want to
work a full week, fish a full day and go to church on Sunday. Regardless of what I do a
part of me will still be thinking about the wonderful times and the wonderful people that
I've met in schools along the way.
One of the things that made June, July, and August so special
was fishing with my dad (Alva D LaFavor), my brother Danny and lifelong friend, Frank
Arthur. This summer I will fish again with Danny and Frank and spin some tales and
remember those barefoot times of days gone by.
Today's Guest
Today's guest was Sam Marlow. Sam and I have been friends now
for over twenty years. We have weathered both high times and low times in our lives and
through it all we have remained more than just friends. Sam was currently tied for second
place in our standings. I believe that today Sam felt it was time to shake up the lineup.
What were the results of our trip? I thought you'd never ask...... Sam and I met at our
usual 7:00 am time and then enjoyed a traditional Huddle House breakfast. We talked a bit,
had omelets and coffee and soon we were on our way. Im sure the Dog has been muddy
before but it was extremely muddy today. We have had 9 inches of rain this month which is
some kind of record Im sure. It is so muddy that you wont believe what washed
down the Dog today! Around 11:00 AM I was sitting there minding my own business when my
Ugly Stik doubled over! At first we thought it was a Carp that was foul hooked. Later I
thought a young disoriented Walrus Seal pup had washed south and into the Dog. We soon
discovered that it was a large catfish! It was him and me and me and him for a time. He
finally managed the old anchor rope tangle trick and straightened my hook. How big was it?
I would say somewhere between 4 and 25 lbs. Only the Shadow knows for sure. We determined
that in 2-3 years from now I would forget all about this moment.
Highlights of today? Sam later caught a nice
Channel Cat and the Ol Captain finally came through with a 3 LB, 5 OZ Carp. We had a
great time and Im sure we will be back soon.
From Staff Reports
Those wild and crazy Wolf boys were at it again today! Chuck
and Brent along with their distinguished guest fished aboard Kens WILLIAM G. They
hung several fish and boated one Carp and one Bream. I am posting their picture featuring
the Wolf version of George Washington crossing the Delaware. Sitting quietly (and safely I
might add) in the middle was General Washingtons right hand man Jerry Adair.
