The
LaFavor Chronicles
            by Horace LaFavor

My guest today was Mr.Ted Umphrey. Ted is a member in good standing at CLBC and a long time friend of the Ol'Captain.Ted and I have known each other at least 25 years but this was our first time together on the ALVA D. He is one of the finest men I know and a gentleman from sole to crown. Why would a fellow of Ted's stature agree to fish on the ALVA D? I believe that Ted just saw an opportunity to simply step up to the plate and show the DRCFA how a real man accepts a challenge!

Last year the poor Dog River Carp suffered from a paucity of publicity. Due to Ken (The Webmaster) Higginbotham and the Ol' Captain's thesaurus, computer, and new Fuji digital camera, that is obviously, no longer the case.

Today's Results

After last week's success, I figured that we would have a boat load by noon. Life (if you haven't noticed) doesn't always turn out like we plan. We anchored for the first time around 8:30am and stopped for the the last time around 1:00. We boated 5 Carp and 1 small Bass during this period. Ted's best which moved him into second place ("first loser" according to Ted) was a 1 lb, 8 ouncer caught at the end of our trip.

The Ol' Captain had to show his stuff today by boating a 4 pounder! Due to my self proclaimed "ineligible" status, I will post my catches in another category to be named later.

We had a wonderful time of fellowship. I learned quite a bit today. I look forward to Ted returning later in the season.

Current Standings

(Please note that the DRCFA will be awarding prizes to the top 5 finishers after the Thanksgiving Day cut-off date.)

1. Ken Higginbotham - 3 lbs, 0 ozs- 3/15/03
2. Ted Umphrey - 1 lb, 8 ozs- 3/22/03
3.
4.
5.
6.Captain's "Catch of the day"- 4lbs, 0 ozs -3/22/03

Upcoming Guests

1. Charlie Goff- Long time mentor and dear friend. Charlie was the obvious choice for last season's ALVA D Award. Folks, don't let this guy's calm spirit and demeanor fool you. When he steps into the boat this year you can rest assured........Charlie will be in it to win it !!

2. Joel Fegarido- Newcomer to the DRCFA. This will be Joel's maiden voyage on the ALVA D. He has read the articles. He has done the research. Now we will see if he is up to the task!! Joel works at Delta with Ken Higginbotham. I think he's been there a while because when I asked him to set a date for the trip he simply said, "We are ready when you are." (just kidding). Does he have some tricks up his sleeve? Rumors are rampant that he may be bringing Sugar Pops cereal and a Fly Rod ! Does this guy have no conscience?

3. Kent Adams- Another new recruit. Kent is a fellow deacon at CLBC (www.countylinebc.org) Like Charlie, he seems calm on the outside but once aboard it may be a Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde thang! He has seen the trophy and heard about the prizes so need I say more?

4. Veteran Atlanta firefighter Dennis Brown. Many of you will remember Dennis as being the first Carp King of 2002. Dennis was also recognized as last season's "Rookie of the Year". Dennis has rested and reflected during the off-season. He has trained. He has been seen working out (perhaps, in the yard...once). He has also prepared himself mentally for the year ahead. With men like this in the running, this Carp thang could get interesting!

Captain Vic.. What have you done?? You are our main Sponsor! You have helped create a monster!!! (www.Vic2Fish.com)

Thought for the week

"Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts."
- Albert Einstein

I think Albert would have enjoyed Carping on the ALVA D .

For Your Information

After looking through the Chronicles from last year I have identified the top three Carp of 2002:

1) 8 lbs, 5 ozs- Lon Wynn (What a King! Will he repeat?)
2) 7 lbs, 4 ozs- Little ol' humble Me :)
3) 6 lbs, 0 ozs- Dennis Brown- First King of 2002

How far can we go in 2003 ?

Stay tuned and see. Until then, keep your line tight or as some say, "Keep the slack out!"

Speaking of slack, You may not have been to church in a while. During this time in our country, many are scared and confused. The Psalmist said that God was his "very present help in times of trouble." You may say that "God doesn't understand my situation." Not only does He understand it, but He loved you so much that he gave His only son to die for you and your situation. Got questions or fears? Bring them to church with you tomorrow.

Take care,
Captain Horace
