The
LaFavor Chronicles

Webster defines a King as being a man who is supreme or highly successful in some field of endeavor.

We have waited. We have been patient. Many long, dreary winter months have passed. When would the cream rise to the top? It was only a matter of time until Royal blood would surface. Today the Dog River Carp Fishing Association’s first Carp King of 2003 was crowned. Ken (Even a blind hog finds an acorn sometime) Higginbotham has the trophy!!! His Golden Ghost weighed in at 3 lbs, 0 ozs. The bar finally is up and the standard has been set.

To what does Ken owe his success? Was it the bait? We tried corn. We chummed with Hunter’s choice dog food. We used worms. The highly publicized freedom fries also made their ALVA D debut today (with no results). Was it the water temperature? The stinkin’rain? The barometric pressure? I’m sure there is a scientific reason for what happened today but his success was brought about primarily by one thing……………….perseverance. This man has gone time after time without a fish. Not even a bite in his previous three trips! He has weathered gale force winds and icy conditions during several pre-season outings on the ALVA D. Even when his teeth were chattering did he quit? No!! He pressed on! His blue blood would not let him give up! Even on a rainy day like today King Ken would not be denied! This is the stuff that champions are made of! His persistence has finally paid off. We are not worthy! We are not worthy! Hail to the first Carp King of 2003!

The Play by Play Account

It was cool and damp when my guest and I got anchored. We had already filled our stationary “chum pipe” with Hunter’s Choice dog food and corn. So we waited. Then we waited some more. Soon after 9:00 the Ol’ Captain’s Carpertise came through. I humbly boated 9 Carp before Higginbotham knew what hit him! I must be a great teacher because shortly thereafter The Webmaster came into his own!! He caught 9 out of the next 10 including two 3 pounders!!! We were in such a Carp Blitz at one time that we didn’t know our starboard from our stern!! Final tally was 19 Carp brought aboard the ALVA D today. For the benefit of you tree huggers, ALL were released!! We will be posting pictures early next week.

Where do we go from here?

If you could have seen the look in Ken’s eyes as he proudly placed the trophy on his mantle. His beautiful wife Terri was, almost speechless. How long will he be King? Time will tell. The trophy remains his until someone catches a bigger one. Remember, it must be caught at Dog River. It must be weighed and verified to be eligible.

What a Tug!

A dear friend shared this story with me this week. I thought I’d pass it along:

A twelve year old boy became a Christian during a revival. The next week at school his friends questioned him about the experience. “Did you see a vision?” asked one friend. “Did you hear God speak?” asked another. The youngster answered no to all the questions.” Well how did you know you were saved?” they asked. The boy searched for a answer and finally he said “It’s like when you catch a fish, you can’t see the fish or hear the fish; you just feel him tugging on your line. I just felt God tugging on my heart.”

Once God tugs at you heart, you can never be the same. Got questions? See you at church tomorrow!

Until next time, Keep those lines tight and that drag set just right!!

The 3 pound, trophy capturing, golden beauty that was willing to sacrifice this undignified moment for a mere taste of the skipper's green giant golden kernel corn... Wow - What a day! Thanks Horace!
