Success by Degrees

Education is such a wonderful thing. Someone once said…”Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach him to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.” Today was a very special day aboard the ALVA D. I was privileged to spend time with my childhood friend Frank Arthur. Frank currently resides in Manhattan, Kansas where he works as a research entomologist for the USDA. We chatted about old times. We laughed and reminisced. We shared and laughed some more. By now you are saying, “So what! Did y’all catch any fish?” I thought you’d never ask……

Sheepskins Finally Pay Off

Two records were shattered today. 1)There were more Degrees on my boat today than on your Momma’s Doctor Pepper thermometer! Frank has a BS degree from the University of Florida. I have one from Berry College. Frank has a Master’s degree from North Carolina State University. I have one from Georgia State. The cream on top is that Frank also has a PhD from NC State. My dad, Alva D had a second grade education…But he taught Frank and I how to fish.

We started at Dog River but it was at Flood Stage. We tried it for an hour or so and then we went to Sweetwater Park Lake. The water was also high there but relying heavily on our education we determined that we might pick up a catfish or two in the muddy water. That leads us to our second record of the day. Dr. Frank Arthur and I boated an all time ALVA D high of 34 Channel Cats in about a four hour stretch today!!! I’m telling you folks, that education finally paid off! Am I talking about college? Heck no! I’m talking about the time that Frank and I spent as kids learning how to fish with Alva D LaFavor. He would have been so proud of us today. I don't know what you rich folks had for supper tonight, but we had Catfish,Fries and Hushpuppies!

I am attaching pics of the flooded Dog, Dr. Frank and the Ol’Captain. Please note that the Ol’ Captain is once again wearing his lucky High-Wah-Yen shirt. Until we meet again keep those lines tight and that drag set just right!
