LaFavor Chronicles

What a great day!

I grew up as a street urchin in Jacksonville, Fla. I always associated the color red with Saturday. It was simple. Red was my favorite color and Saturday was my favorite day. Saturday was my heyday! I would fish, swim, ride my bike and just do what boys are supposed to do on Saturdays.

While red is no longer my favorite color (I'm partial now to blue) Saturday's are still dear to me.

Today was special in three ways. I finished a book that I've been reading. I went to my grandson's sixth birthday party and believe it or not, I went fishing.

Charles Swindoll has written the biography of several famous Bible characters. Among those are David, Paul, Esther, Joseph and Elijah. I finished reading Elijah this morning. After reading this book I can honestly tell you that I will never be the same. What heroism! What humility! Once again God used a seemingly obscure individual from a nowhere place (Tishbeh) to do extraordinary things.

After I closed the book, Ramona and I went to Chuck E Cheese for Jacobs's party. Only love can draw a sane adult to such a place. We payed our respects. We oooed. We awwwed at the gifts as well as the cake. Finally, after I had been chastised and told twice to "sit down and relax" we were able to leave the party.

We got home around 2:30 PM. It was cold and misty but I had a window of time before dark. I hooked up to the ALVA D and headed to Sweetwater Park. I was anchored around 3:00. As the wind howled I began to see indicators of the winter to come.

You know it's getting cold at Sweetwater Park when:

a) The leaves are gone. b) The ducks are gone except Canada Geese and those crazy Coots. c) The boats are gone. d) The people are gone. e) The liquid in your Libby's Chicken Vienna Sausage has congealed.

Results?

I caught 3 Channel cats and was home by 5:00! Two were caught on the Vienna sausage and the biggest weighed 3Lbs, 11 ozs! Yep. Today was certainly a heyday. By the way, we had fresh catfish fillets and fries for supper. You might say.."Well that's nothing!" I'm reminded of a line from Paul Newman in the movie "Cool Hand Luke." Luke said after bluffing and winning a poker game....." Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand."

I hope I never grow up.

By the way, if God can use Elijah the Tishbite he can use me and you as well. Want to know more? See you in church tomorrow.

Tight lines,

Capt. Horace
