Turner Time!

The year was 1978. Two years after our nation’s Bi-Centennial Celebration. The #1 country music song was sung by a baritone balladeer named Don Williams.

The song was Tulsa Time. The first part goes like this:

I left Oklahoma, drivin in a Pontiac
Just about to lose my mind
I was goin to Arizona
Maybe on to California
Where the people all live so fine...

The song featured a man searching for something that was missing in his life. There was a vacuum in his soul that simply had to be filled. The craving was incredible. He longed to satisfy this void even if it meant traveling all the way from Oklahoma to the west coast.

My guest today was Charles Turner. His situation brought this song to my mind. Charles isn't looking for a hit recording but he has had an unsatiable desire this year to place in the top 5 on our Carp Chart. As you can see from his picture above, he has caught the cats this season but sadly enough, he hasn't even had a chance to catch a Carp! Catfishing just cannot take the place of getting on the DRCFA's Carp Scoreboard. That’s like expecting a diet coke to be tasty just because you put peanuts in it. Unless it’s the "Real Thing", it just isn’t going to happen (and believe me, Carpin' IS the Real Thang!).Week after week poor Charles has patiently waited for his chance at bat. He has seen the names appear and disappear on the board. He has seen the pictures come and go. Even if it meant graciously waiting over half the season to make his Carpin’ debut, Sir Charles knew that it would soon be Turner Time! He has been calm, cool and collected. His self-control and humility are a tribute to the DRCFA. Charles is indeed an icon of virtue. Did his patience pay off? Did Charles cash in today? Did he win, place or show? Did my boy Charles bump others off the board? I thought you’d never ask……

Our Story

Was it “Turner Time” today or just time? Charles and I had a long hot day. The fishing was slow. My trolling motor shorted out and I burned my fingers on a battery clip. We had very few pull downs at all. We fished faithfully until 2:15 then gave up the corn. The final tally was four Carp and two Channel cats. The Carp were all less than 2 lbs. So small that Charles didn’t even want his picture made. Being the ever humble Captain that I am I have attached a picture of one of my Cats for your viewing pleasure.

I mentioned in a recent post that Captain Vic had given us some ink in his newsletter. We are indeed getting some exposure. Just check this out:

"Just to let you know for future reference, my reports go out to 878 people automatically on e-mail and it's published on 34 fishing web sites across the country. All the way to Cal. So yes, you all get quite a bit of exposure. Every once in a while I'll receive an e-mail asking all about it. The next one I receive I'll try to remember to forward a copy to you so you can see where they come from, etc. Take care and hope to see you sometime soon."

Life Lesson

So in the final analysis is the DRCFA about Carp or is it about people? I think it is about spending a quiet morning with an old (or new) friend on a 40 year old boat. It's about talking, laughing, relaxing and spending some time enjoying God’s beautiful creation. It’s not Turner time, Carp time or even Tulsa time. It is all God’s time and it passes ever so quickly. How are you spending God's time? Want to know more about God and His time? Visit His house tomorrow.

Today's Quote

"Lord, I hope this day is good
Im feelin empty and misunderstood
I should be thankful Lord, I know I should
But Lord I hope this day is good."

(From another Don Williams song )
