Uncle Ben
Rice is a wonderful staple. My Grandma cooked a pot of rice
every day of my first 17 years. She steamed it in this galvanized double boiler pot on the
top of the stove. She was from South Carolina where rice is plentiful and rice is cheap. I
hardly saw a baked potato until I entered the hallowed halls of education at Berry College
in 1970. Back home, rice was what you put your black eyed peas on. You added some hot
pepper juice to taste and a side order of cornbread. The cornbread might be corn pone type
bread or it might be a grilled hoe cake. Hoe cakes look like pancakes but they
are not.
I lived almost 50 years before I discovered that rice had
another use. Last year, Greg Uncle Ben Nunnelly, introduced us to rice as a
chum for catfish. Greg had read an article in some Alabama Times Gazette and had done some
research on the Coosa River in his sweet home Alabama. It seems that one can throw out
some rice in an area and the cats are attracted to it. You chum and then come back later
and you might catch a catfish that feels like a beanbag with whiskers. After you chum you
can catch the cats using chicken livers for bait. When asked why the fish bite the livers,
Greg might say
..They needed some meat to go with them vegetables! Being
the fine Christian man that Greg is, he prefers to use only converted rice.
Greg is mainly a Bass fisherman. He and his son-in-law fish
Alabama Bass tournaments on a regular basis. Greg also deer hunts and all things
considered, is one of the best outdoorsmen in the DRCFA. He has been my guest on two rice
slinging catfish trips but today we went Carpin. That, my friends, is a whole
different pot on the stove. What were the results? I thought youd never ask.
We anchored early. I had to quit around noon today. Soon we
had our lines out and were waiting on a pull down. By definition, a pull
down is when the Carp takes your bait and runs with it. This run pulls your rod down
and if youre not ready may pull your rod overboard. I had three pull downs at our
first stop and didnt boat a fish. We moved and soon Uncle Ben caught our first Carp.
Id love you tell you that we loaded the boat today but we only caught two. I finally
caught one later in the morning. The fish of the day award goes to Greg with his 2 Lb, 3
oz Carp. My fish of the day was a fine 3 inch Bream. I am attaching Gregs best and
my Bream.
We had a great time of fun and fellowship. We will go again
soon.
