Shunem is a home which has been established in the last three
years to accommodate elderly folks and the young children of the lepers who are
looked after at the Leprosy Centre. Obviously they can't live with their
folks while they're in treatment and to ensure they don't end up on the streets
begging, Shunem provides them with a temporary home,
meals, education etc. until they're ready to go home again to their parents,
after their treatment program. So it performs an important function. What
was extraordinary about this presentation is that it was in English.
The children are predominantly Telugu speakers and English has only been a
recent addition to their language skills and then not by any means fully learnt.
But they nevertheless mastered enough to sing songs and tell the story of the
birth of Jesus and his coming return as king, very, very well!!
