Hidden Treasures

2/3 cup Butter Flavor Crisco

3/4 cup sugar

1 egg

1 tablespoon milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

48 maraschino cherries well drained on paper towels

1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream Butter Flavored Crisco, sugar, egg, milk and vanilla in large bowl at medium speed of electric mixer until well blended.

2.Combine flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda. Beat into creamed mixture at low speed.

3.Press dough into very thin layer around well drained cherries. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheet

4. Before baking the balls, put chocolate wafers on a cookie sheet and gently heat (don't melt them).. I use a heating pad as shown in photo.

5.Bake ten minutes and then, while still hot,  gently place on partially melted chocolate wafer as shown in photo. (Hint: Because the cherry will settle to the bottom while baking you need to place them on the chocolate wafer before coating the cooked ball with chocolate coating.

If you don't want to  chocolate coat the cooked balls,  omit steps 4 and 5 and cool 1 minute on baking sheet and remove to wire rack to cool completely. I think they look nicer and taste better with the chocolate coating.
