Checkerboard Refrigerator Cookies
4 cups sifted flour ( 1lb 5oz or 600g)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 cup butter, margarine or shortening
2 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
Sift together flour, soda, cream of tartar and salt.
Cream butter or shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla, beating well. Add dry ingredients and mix thoroughly
Divide dough into four equal parts, place each in a plastic bag and roll until 1/4 inch thick. Freeze. Do not thaw before cutting.
Use the above recipe for the next batch of dough which will darker be darker (for the checkerboard effect and add or subsitute as follows:
Mix in 4 oz liquid chocolate, or
Take out 4 tablespoons flour and mix in 4 tablespoons cocoa

Bake in 400 degree oven on ungreased sheet for 8 to 10 minutes
