During the Fall 2000 semester I was enrolled in English 328:Writing Style and Language. This portfolio is dedicated to giving you a glimpse into what the class assignments consist of and also allows you to read samples of my writing (for the class and otherwise). I hope that you enjoy this little trip into my scholastic and creative thoughts.
The first assignment of the semester in this class was to invent a way of writing without using anything that could be considered a part of today's technology. In other words, definitely not a computer. The part that may be surprising to you is that pens, pencils, paper, paint, etc. are all considered part of technology that we take for granted everyday. This assignment opened my eyes to all of the materials around me that used to go unnoticed. Without a doubt, this assignment was the most fun for me all semester!
The second assignment was to evaluate an advertisement using Crowley and Hawhee's book, Ancient Rhetorics for Contemporary Students. The point of this essy was to demonstrate whether ancient style rules were still applicable to advertisements today and if they were used, were they effective.
The assignment that I had the most difficulty with was the third writing assignment for the semester. The intent of this paper was to compare some aspect of two of the styleguides that we read in class. I chose to do my comparison between The Elements of Style by William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White and Style Towards Clarity and Grace by Joseph M. Williams. I chose to evaluate the differnece the between who the books were written for, to put it simply, audience.
The two assignments that I learned the most from, though, would have to be the two web pages. If you are reading this right now, then you know about one of them. This page gave me stress until I realized that html is really easy and you do not have to be a computer genius to make a web page (trust me!). After I found how simple it really is, I really enjoyed doing these web assignments. The other web asssignment is a group project. Our group, since we are all English Education students, chose to make a web site evaluating four different web sites on lesson plans. If you are in the College of Ed and need some lesson plans, we did find some good sites! I hope you enjoy this web page as much as I stressed over the production of it. (I'm kidding, it really was fun to make!)
