More on the visible image -

Much of the time, to aid in weather forecasting, cloud formations are of interest in visible images from NOAA satellites. In this image, few clouds are present but a striking view of the eastern USA is achieved. The ridge and valley nature of our region is discernable going from northeast to southwest. In other words the mountains locations can be made out. I'm not sure if this is due to springtime differences in vegetation from mountain tops to valleys or if there is fog or snow present only at certain altitudes. Several rivers are able to be seen - the St Lawerence Seaway, the Susquehanna, and the Delaware. Some of the Potomac, near the Bay shows. Notice that the water in this image is dark compared to the white representing cold water in the IR image. Note Long Island, Cape Cod, the Eastern Shore and the Outer Banks on the USA coast.
