OLD CROW - P51D Mustang Project (click on photos to enlarge) I really enjoyed my Nosen Mustang with a Zenaoh G62 engine but it was a bit too large for every day flying. When Top Flite came out with a 1/5 scale Mustang kit, I checked it out, the reviews read good,, so I bought one. I hope to finish this Mustang in the colors of Old Crow, This will be a flying Mustang, not a hangar queen. My goals are - light, easy of assembly, ease of maintenance, and good flight performance. I intend to use a US 41 gas engine, have plug in wings and a removable top hatch canopy. Lets get at it. The kit has lots of parts many of them light ply. I intend to drill most of the plywood parts with forsner bits to reduce their weight. Forsner bits drill without shredding, get a set. Here is the US 41 engine and the 5" Dave Brown spinner. I did not use the Zinger spinner. I had a Zinger spinner on the Nosen Mustang, the metal is soft, the perimeter screws to hold the cone on were coming loose, the Dave Brown spinner was almost the same cost and better quality. The main fuselage is framed, took one evening. Tex dropped over to check things out, after much discussion he convinced me to go with a one piece wing and gave me a good idea for a single flap servoe. Since my main goal is a light airframe, the one piece wing wins. Also made a holder for the air tank out of heavy bond paper. Oct 20, 2001 - left wing framed, 9 oz for far, basswood spars replaced with medium hard balsa, 7 ounces saved, wing built according to the instruction book and came out nice and straight.
