A Poem from a Police Officer's Wife

Every night I watch you dress.

Vest, uniform and gun, a combination to save lives.

My chest hurts as you kiss me goodbye and walk out that door.

I close the door and run to the window to watch you drive away, praying that I will see you again in the morning.

I sit though out the night wondering if people really know what you sacrifice every time you walk out that door, your wife, your children, your life so you can protect our community.

I pray that God guides you in the dark and never blinks for fear that you will be hurt.

A noble career for a man worthy.

Please forgive the people that look down at you.

Yell names at you as you drive through their neighborhood, and the people that laugh behind your back.

The truth is, my love, these people will need you someday.

Their child will be missing and you will find him.

A woman's husband will be attacked and you will never stop looking for them.

A man's wife will be caught in a fire and you will run into their house to save her life.

All of these things you do every day.

When you walk out that door, you are willing to lay your life down to make our world a better place to live in, even for all those people that have laughed at you.

A noble career, a noble man, you could be no other my love.
