The land known as Silverstream was originally occupied by a Mr
D.F.Barnard, who was given title to the property in 1896. Eventually the farm was
abandoned, the simple house he built becoming a ruin and the area reverting back to
nature.
One can't help thinking what life was like for these people who eked out an existence
farming sheep in these remote, beautiful, but almost inaccessible mountain regions,
especially when their sheep suffered the depredations of leopard, hyena and jackals.
Leopard, even today, although rarely seen, are known to exist in the kloofs of the
surrounding mountains.
Silverstream was bought by the present owners in 1978 and is now administered by the
E.Z.Powrie Trust as a piece of pristine mountain land to be preserved in it's natural
state for it's unique Fynbos heritage.
