02/13/02 - Date of last update to this page. The first group is for the lifetime home run record, the second group is the single season record. Both are tracked from 1880. Ruth broke the single season record four times, the last occurring in 1927 when he hit 60. Note the similarity and pattern in the number of years that each record was held once the sport had matured: lifetime - 26, 53, 28; season 35, 42, 37. Bonds breaking McGwire's record after only three seasons disrupts that. If Bonds were to break the lifetime record in 4-5 years it would maintain the general pattern.
