| ALL ABOUT FM RADIO FREQUENCY MODULATION (FM) is the newer form of radio broadcasting. First developed in the late 1930s, FM radio enjoyed a huge surge in the late '60s and early '70s, thanks in large part to progressive rock bands. Today, virtually every music station (pop, rock, soul, country, etc...) can be found on the FM dial. The principal advantage FM has over AM is because the sound quality is better and is free from interference from other stations. The main disadvantage about FM is that they travel only at line-of-sight distances, compared to groundwave and skywave (at night) on AM. FM stations operate on frequencies of 88.1-107.9 megahertz (MHz) by authority of the FCC. Here are the frequencies of FM radio, according to their assigned broadcast channels: |
