| Nov. 27, 2003 Dear Parents, I read Knots on a Counting Rope to the children. This is a wonderful story about a little Native American boy who is born blind. He loves to hear the stories of his birth and childhood from his grandfather who ties a knot in a piece of rope each time he tells a story to his grandson. The text is rich and lyrical and lends itself beautifully to our discussions of families and traditions. It focuses on Native American culture including how names are chosen and their significance, etc. as well as overcoming handicaps. I am sending home a length of rope with each child with directions that for each story they are told over Thanksgiving, they may tie a knot in their own counting rope. Since many of you will be with extended family, including grandparents, this might be a good opportunity for your little ones to hear lots of family stories. It would also be fun to share with your child how their name was chosen. Please return the counting ropes to school on Tues, as we will graph the results and share stories. Thank you for your continued support, kind words of praise, and encouragement. Your children are the real Kindergarten Kingdom Treasures!
