LET GO AND LET GOD
Only three days after Gordon and Arthur bought the house, they were
wishing they had a landlord, because the kitchen sink was clogged. In
fact, it was clogged almost all the way to the top. Of course, neither
of them wanted to fix it, so whenever they needed it, they would glance
at that dark black who-knows-what in the drain and then use the
bathroom sink instead. After eight days had passed and the sink hadn't
managed to unclog itself, the housemates finally decided to work on it
together.
Well, they tried everything they could think of, but
nothing worked. They couldn't even say that they had made any progress.
That black thing refused to move or break. After struggling with it for
more than an hour, Gordon and Arthur decided to go to sleep.
The next
morning, Arthur awoke to hear Gordan shouting. He got up and found
Gordon in the kitchen jumping excitedly. "What's going on?" he asked.
"Look!" Gordon shouted, pointing at the sink. Gordon had left the water
running, and it was going straight down the drain. The clog was
completely gone. It looked as if the sink had never been clogged at all.
"Wow!" shouted
Arthur, "That's awesome! I guess we must have loosened it or something
last night, and then gravity did the rest while we were sleeping."
Gordon stopped jumping and looked at his housemate. "You don't think that God did this?"
"Oh, give me a break," Arthur said. "Don't start with that God
crap again. No, I don't think God did this. We did it, with some
help from gravity."

After struggling with it for more than an hour, Gordon and Arthur decided to go to sleep.
"But first," said Gordon, "I'm going to ask God to fix it."
"Oh, give me a break," Arthur said. "Don't start with that God crap again." But Gordon dropped to his knees, closed his eyes, bowed his head, and began to speak.
"Oh God," he said, "You
have shown people so many wonderous miracles throughout history.
Nothing is too hard for You. You are worthy of all my praise. And I
hope that the day will come when my friend Arthur will also give You
his praise." Arthur snickered, but Gordon continued. "As You know, our
sink is clogged, and we don't know what to do. So I humbly come before
You, understanding that I am not worthy of Your consideration. In fact,
You would be completely justified in taking away the life that You gave
me. So I ask You to forgive me for all of my many transgressions
against You. And, if You are willing, please fix our sink while we
sleep tonight. I ask this in Your holy name. Amen."

"Wow," said Arthur, "Uh... I... hmm... Well, um... there must be some
kind of reasonable explanation for this. I mean, like, maybe we
loosened
it or something last night, and then gravity did the rest while we were
sleeping..."
Gordon stopped jumping and looked at his housemate. "You don't think that God did this?"
"Uh, well... I don't know."
And a seed had been planted.
This is why God wants us to ask Him for things. It gives Him the
opportunity to demonstrate His power and receive glory.
