Upset by ISP's 'right to scan'
I WOULD like to thank StarHub for introducing more
competition to the Internet service provider (ISP) business,
leading to lower prices and more efficient services all round for
consumers.
Without fail, I have managed to log in to StarHub at the first
attempt since I registered with them.
However, I noticed recently some unusual terms and conditions
relating to StarHub's service which I would like to bring to their
attention as well as that of every Singaporean.
Under section 10 (f), in StarHub's website
http://regww.mystarhub. com.sg/about/mystarhub. html, it is
stated: "We reserve Our rights, with or without notice to You: to
undertake any search or scan of Your data and system for such
maintenance, security or policing purposes as We reasonably
think necessary and You confirm that we shall not be liable to
You or any third party for any doing any of the above."
Besides the obvious typo error in the above clause, I would think
that after the recent illegal scanning incident in Singapore, such
a clause would be viewed with suspicion.
I hope StarHub will clarify what it means by this clause. To
Singaporeans, it is clearly non-trivial that StarHub could scan
our computers without our consent.
