    Most prefer millennium error

I REFER to "The new millennium is not until 2001" by Amos Wu Pom Hin (ST, Nov 11).

I am glad that at least someone in Singapore is finally voicing a fact that the whole world chooses to ignore or is ignorant of.

The end of the 20th century is not Dec 31, 1999, but Dec 31, 2000.

As we are moving to become a knowledge-based economy, it certainly does not help us very much if the whole nation echoes the wrong fact.

But since plans are underway everywhere to celebrate the "end of the millennium", I think many people would rather stay mistaken than correct their misconception. For example, the Christmas light-up at Orchard Road this year is labelled the "Last Christmas of the millennium" -- something well supported by the Singapore Tourism Board.

I doubt anyone would want to postpone the event to next year just to be correct.

Yes, this time, emotion has triumphed over logic.

Look on the bright side: if people set out to accomplish their goals before the end of the millennium and think that they are running out of time as 1999 draws to an end, it may be comforting to know that there is still time -- one more year to be exact.
