The original book this is based on is not what you might expect. The book, written by the real Peter Dickenson, is not a story but a book of theories of how dragons really could have existed at some point in time. The concept of this movie was to turn Peter Diskenson into one of the main characters and put him in the middle of a big quest. It's a strange concept but it works better than it should. The questing group starts small but grows to a medium sized group including 2 dragons (one of which is Peter after a spell mishap), a halfling, a female ranger, a valiant knight, and a talking wolf. I like the fact that the wolf is one of the goodguys. Unusual decision, but for the better.
The art style of the movie is a bit quirky. Some characters had puffy lips that are just hard to look at and Arak's whiskers are the thickest I've ever seen in animation. The dragons are a but strange to look at too, think of a balloon with 4 legs, a tail, and a head and you'll get the idea.
So what do 4 magic brothers do when magic is weakening and people are switching to science? Well, Carolinus proposes to build a last realm of magic with their remaining powers. Omadon, the evil wizard, wants man to destroy himself with his own science. Well, the 4 magic brothers are not able to war on each other so they must inspire a quest instead. If Omadon's crown is stolen, he will lose his powers and die. Oh yeah, and more people keep getting added to this quest until it seems kind of like a dungeons and dragons adventure.
Peter Dickenson: (John Ritter) Scientist turned boardgame designer and author. He's decended from a legendary hero called great Peter.
Carolinus: The green wizard of nature's realm. His dragon is Gorbash, formerly Smergol.
Solarius: The blue wizard of heights and depths. His dragon is Lunarian.
Lo Tae Shao: The golden wizard of peace and meditation. His dragon is Chen Tsu..
Other members of the party: There's Giles of the treetops, kind of a hobbit type character. There's Daniel, the female ranger, and there;s Arak, the wolf.
The badguys:
Ommadon: (James Earl Jones) The red wizard of all evil magic. His dragon is Breyogg.
Others:
Millison: Carolinus adopted her when she was 5 and now she's Peter's dream girl. She has a power to see over distances.
