A Caboose Comes to Kelsey

In the midst of snow showers, two giant cranes lifted a 32 ton
caboose onto a flatbed truck for a ride to Kelsey's "Main Street",
where it makes its home today at the Kelsey Hall.

Realizing that CN no longer used cabooses at the tail end of their
trains, Don Gregorwich approached the company representatives in
Montreal and Edmonton about donating one of the retired units to the
Kelsey Community Society.

In December, 1996, four years after his initial call, and after a number
of letters and phone calls, Don received a letter from CN.
The corporation had agreed to donate a caboose to the
community. The generous donation was subject to the society
agreeing to restore the rail piece's exterior and ensuring its
protection from vandalism.

After inspection by KCS members, plans were made for moving it to
Kelsey. The caboose was delivered by rail Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1997.
Cartier Cranes and Brager Transport of Camrose used heavy machinery
to move the 64,000 pound caboose from the railway siding to its
new spot next to the Kelsey Community Hall.

KCS plans to incorporate the caboose with the
hall for use of community residents.
