| Tibetan Nuns Project | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Tibetan Nuns' Project came into being in response to a tremendousinflux of Buddhist nuns from Tibet into India. What began as a trickle in the mid-1980s became a flood by the early 1990s.Nuns leave Tibet because of the repressive political environment there. All seek religious freedom; most are thirsty for education. Because they have demonstrated peacefully for political freedom in Tibet, many have been tortured and imprisoned and are in need of healing. When they arrive in India, they find few resources available to help them. The Tibetan Nuns Project is working to alleviate this situation. A sponsorship program initiated in 1991 has grown steadily over the years and now supports over 400 nuns. Several new nunneries have been established to provide housing and education for these arrivals from Tibet. The Tibetan Nuns Project also assists the established nunneries in the Dharamsala area, with a particular emphasis on improving health, sanitation, and education. The plan for the future is to build an Institute of Higher Studies: it will be the first of its kind available to ordained Tibetan women. Eventually, we would like to make it available to non-ordained women as well.The goal of the Tibetan Nuns Project is to assist these courageous women in developing external resources and skills to complement their demonstrated inner resources. We want to support them in becoming effective agents, determining the course of their own lives, taking leadership roles in the community, and serving others. |
