The Caronas are actually a modified version of an ion frigate class orginally maintained by the empire. The newer improvements were more anti-ship weapons, a better powerplant, and many minor details one does not spot at first glance. One such improvement was the installation of the same sensor system carried by the Delta destroyer. Like the Deleta, it must decloak before it can fire. But rather than saturate the enemy with a lot of torpedos, the Carona boasts an early version of the Argo Frigates Ion cannon. Though no where near as powerful, it can still slice ships to pieces as proved during the battle of Etherian Roads.
